Only a handful of anime have dominated the industry for more than a decade, and One Piece has arguably been the world’s most popular series for a quarter-century. Fans love One Piece because the series tells a very detailed and emotional story with well-written characters. It also helps that the series has a good amount of action that usually involves great villains.
It is true that One Piece has its fair share of terrible villains, but for the most part, they are all complex individuals. One Piece villains are special because many of them have interesting points of view and backstories that make them far more sympathetic. Sure, villains are labeled villains for a reason, but some of One Piece’s villains are not actually that bad.
10 Big Mom Wants A World Free Of Discrimination
As one of the Four Emperors, Big Mom is one of the strongest characters in the series. She possesses incredibly powerful Armament and Conqueror’s Haki, and her Devil Fruit gives her the ability to manipulate and steal souls.
Big Mom is a ruthless pirate, and she has no problem stealing a person’s entire soul and lifespan, but at the end of the day, she has decent intentions. She was abandoned as a child for being different, which is why she wishes to turn her kingdom into a place where discrimination does not exist. Totto Land may be a wildly impractical base, but the idea behind it is admirable.
9 King Follows Kaido Because He Saved Him
Kaido has one of the series’ best laughs, and in terms of design, he is one of the scariest characters to appear. As one of the Four Emperors, his crew is filled with strong fighters, including King, who belongs to a nearly extinct race called the Lunarians.
When he was a child, King was held captive on Punk Hazard because the World Government wished to experiment on him. Kaido was being held in the same facility at the same time, and when he broke out, he saved King. Kaido has done some terrible things, but King owes him his life, and he wishes to make Kaido Pirate King so he can bring about a better world.
8 Fujitora Cares About Doing The Right Thing
The Marines are the World Government’s police force, and One Piece does a good job of making the group virtuous and antagonistic. Fujitora is a Marine Admiral, and despite being blind, he is a master swordsman who can create and manipulate gravitational forces with his Devil Fruit.
Thanks to other Admirals like Akainu and Kizaru, fans have seen a twisted form of justice that involves destroying the enemy at all costs. Fujitora may want to capture the Straw Hats, but his only goal is to do what is good, and his primary goal is to protect people.
7 Senor Pink Loves His Wife & Son
Doflamingo can take on some tough individuals, and his crew was filled with unique characters who were fairly strong. Senor Pink was one of Doflamingo’s officers, and his Devil Fruit gave him the ability to effortlessly swim through the ground and walls.
When he was younger, Pink had a wife and son, and he pretended to be a banker because his wife despised pirates. Their son died from a serious fever, and she eventually learned that he was a pirate. His wife ended up in a vegetative state after getting into an accident, and he dresses like a baby because it was the only thing that made her smile before she died.
6 Gin Decided To Save Sanji’s Life
Gin has not appeared since the Baratie Arc, and he is the Combat Commander of the Kreig Pirates. He does not possess a Devil Fruit, but he is a very capable martial artist who uses a special pair of batons with large metal spheres.
Don Krieg may be a cruel and dishonest pirate, but Gin is fiercely loyal to him, to the point that he would sacrifice his life for him. Gin’s crew may admire his cruelty, but he is not a terrible person. Sanji is the only person who ever treated Gin kindly, and as a result, he refused to kill him. He even gave Luffy his gas mask to protect him from Krieg’s poison.
5 Aokiji Was The Most Compassionate Admiral
Aokiji is currently affiliated with Blackbeard, but it is hard to believe that he is not acting like some type of double agent. He is a former Marine Admiral, and his Logia Devil Fruit allows him to create, manipulate, and transform into ice.
He and Akainu fought to see who would become Fleet Admiral, and he did this because he despises Akainu’s brutal actions. He is a compassionate and laid-back individual who is willing to compromise with pirates. He let Luffy and the Straw Hats go because they stopped Crocodile from taking over Alabasta, and he allowed Robin to escape the Buster Call that annihilated her island.
4 Reiju Is Not Like The Rest Of Her Family
Reiju is Sanji’s older sister, and as one of the military commanders of Germa 66, she has helped her family to perform various mercenary operations that have caused a great deal of harm. Their brothers abused Sanji daily because he still had compassion, and she was the one who treated his injuries in secret.
She may hide it from her other siblings and father, but Reiju is a compassionate individual, and she was the one who freed Sanji from his forced imprisonment. She also saved Luffy’s life, in what is one of the series’ luckiest moments.
3 Hachi Regrets What He Did
One of the saddest moments in the entire series came when fans learned Nami’s backstory. Arlong and his crew came to Nami’s village, and he executed her adoptive mother in front of her. He then forced Nami to be his mapmaker and told her that he would free her village if she brought him enough money.
Hachi was part of Arlong’s crew, and he ends up meeting Nami and the Straw Hats later during the Sabaody Archipelago Arc. During this meeting, Hachi expressed to Nami how much he regretted what his crew did to her, and that he has been trying to atone for his past actions ever since.
2 Dragon May Be The World’s Most Wanted Criminal, But He Wants To Free The World
Monkey D. Dragon is Luffy’s father, and the only reason he is classified as a villain is that the World Government considers him to be the world’s worst criminal. He earned this moniker because he is the leader of the Revolutionary Army, and his goal is to overthrow the World Government.
The World Government may pride itself on justice, but it is an extremely corrupt institution filled with despicable nobles. It also uses excessive force to suppress history and learning. Dragon wishes to end the World Government so the people of the world can truly be free.
1 Katakuri Just Wants To Protect His Family
Charlotte Katakuri is Big Mom’s second son, and he is by far the second strongest member of her crew. He can use all forms of Haki, but he is especially proficient in Observation Haki, and he has an awakened Devil Fruit which allows him to create, control, and transform into mochi.
The fight between Katakuri and Luffy was very impressive, and it was through their battle that fans saw how honorable he is. He willingly injured himself after one of his sisters injured Luffy from afar. He is a dangerous pirate, but he only fights in order to protect his family.
