If a new report is to be believed, Star Wars fans can likely expect to see The Mandalorian Season 3 premiere on Disney+ just before 2022 winds to a close.
In the latest edition of his Inside Line feature, TVLine‘s Matt Webb Mitovich was asked if he knows when Disney+’s The Mandalorian will return for its highly-anticipated third season. “It is a safe bet that Season 3 will premiere this year, probably around Life Day Christmastime,” Mitovich replied.
If The Mandalorian Season 3 does indeed premiere around Christmas 2022, it would not be surprising, as both seasons of the live-action Star Wars series to air thus far have debuted towards the end of their respective calendar years. The Mandalorian Season 1 ran from Nov. 12, 2019 to Dec. 27, 2019, while Season 2 ran from Oct. 30, 2020 to Dec. 18, 2020. The Disney+ spinoff limited series The Book of Boba Fett — which effectively serves as “The Mandalorian Season 2.5″ in places — has continued this trend, premiering on Dec. 29, 2021. The Book of Boba Fett is slated to conclude this Wednesday, Feb. 9.
Furthermore, Star Wars has become something of a Christmastime tradition ever since The Walt Disney Company took over the franchise following its acquisition of Lucasfilm. With the exception of 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, every live-action Star Wars feature released under the Disney banner has hit theaters in December. This trend shows no sign of stopping, as director Patty Jenkins’ upcoming Star Wars spinoff film Rogue Squadron is currently slated for release on Dec. 22, 2023.
Granted, there are a number of other live-action Star Wars projects expected to hit Disney+ this year, outside of Christmastime. Obi-Wan Kenobi is reportedly arriving in May, with Andor expected to premiere in mid-to-late 2022. That said, The Mandalorian is often viewed as Disney+’s flagship Star Wars series, meaning a December release for Season 3 is still rather likely.
The Mandalorian star and co-director Carl Weathers confirmed in August 2021 that production on Season 3 was expected to begin “within the next month.” Weathers later confirmed that production on the third season was officially underway as of October 2021. He then provided an update this past January, stating that the Mandalorian team was still “in the thick” of shooting Season 3. A report published back in September 2021 claimed that The Mandalorian Season 3 was expected to wrap production around March 2022.
The Mandalorian Season 2 left off with Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and company defeating Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito), at which point Din was forced to part ways with Grogu. The Book of Boba Fett recently revisited these characters, with Din trying to get a feel for wielding the Darksaber, being exiled from his Mandalorian tribe and even getting a new ship before agreeing to aid Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) in his war against the Pyke Syndicate. Meanwhile, Grogu has begun his Jedi training under the tutelage of Luke Skywalker, though struggles with his attachment to Din.
