One Original Scream Castmember Discusses Potential Return for the Sixth Movie

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Scream, now playing in theaters.

Courteney Cox, who’s managed to survive all five Scream movies, shared her thoughts on returning for the recently announced sixth film in the slasher franchise.

“Does that mean I didn’t die?” Cox joked when asked by ComicBook.com if she’ll reprise the role of Gale Weathers in the upcoming sequel to 2022’s Scream. “Okay, if I’m allowed to say that, of course. What a fun experience to have such a longstanding series of movies and this one just feels completely invigorated in a new way. And it’s a relaunch, not a fifth episode, whatever you call it.”

Cox went on to praise Scream 2022 directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, adding that original director Wes Craven “would be looking down and saying, ‘I’m so happy it’s Matt and Tyler.'”

Following the box office success of 2022’s Scream, Paramount Pictures recently announced that a sixth installment in the franchise is underway. Directors Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin are returning to helm the upcoming sequel, with screenwriters James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick once again penning the script. Production on the next entry in the horror saga is scheduled to begin this summer.

Although the fifth Scream installment shifted the main focus to a new cast of characters, the franchise’s legacy stars still played pivotal roles in the film. In addition to the return of Cox’s Gale Weathers, the sequel/reboot sees Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott and David Arquette’s Deputy Dewey Riley go back to Woodsboro to help the latest batch of victims survive a new spree of Ghostface murders.

Released on Jan. 14, Scream dethroned Spider-Man: No Way Home over its opening weekend, becoming the first film to unseat the Marvel blockbuster since its debut on Dec. 17. As of this writing, Scream has earned more than $120 million worldwide — a substantial profit for a movie that cost $25 million to produce. The film’s box office success is all the more impressive considering the ongoing omicron-fueled surge in COVID-19 cases.

Should Cox’s Gale show up in the sixth Scream entry, Campbell’s Sidney could potentially return as well, but with Arquette’s Dewey meeting his demise in the latest installment, it seems unlikely the actor will reprise his role. It’s not impossible, however, for Arquette to reappear in some capacity as several former stars whose characters were slaughtered by Ghostface, including Drew Barrymore and Jamie Kennedy, make secret cameos in the new Scream.

Scream is currently playing in theaters.
