Daredevil’s Charlie Cox Reveals the Exact Moment He Found Out He Was Joining the MCU

Daredevil actor Charlie Cox turns back the clock as he reveals the exact moment he learned he would be bringing his Man Without Fear into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Following the cancellation of Netflix’s Daredevil series in 2018, Cox described learning he would be reprising his role as the titular vigilante in the MCU years later as “incredibly unexpected and out of the blue.” Cox recalled meeting Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige after performing alongside Loki actor Tom Hiddleson in the 2019 stage play Betrayal. “[Feige] said ‘Hi’ and how much he enjoyed the play, but never mentioned Daredevil or anything like that,” Cox said during an interview with Hey U Guys. The actor playfully called Feige a “very good liar as well,” as Cox went on to talk about his cameo as Daredevil’s alter ego Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home. “I got the call mid-way through lockdown, summer of 2020, and I filmed [No Way Home] in March or something of ’21. So I had to keep it a secret for almost a year — and then, of course, I didn’t come out [until Dec.], so over a year. So, yeah, it’s been intense.”

Joining Cox in the transition from the Netflix series and into the MCU is actor Vincent D’Onofrio, who reprised his role as the menacing Kingpin in the Season 1 finale of Hawkeye. Cox recalled playing coy with his former co-star around the time both were becoming aware of their characters’ continuing futures. “I can’t remember exactly what it was, but [D’Onofrio] texted me at some point, and it was like, ‘I know something. Do you know something?'” Cox said. “And I was like, ‘I do know something,’ but I wasn’t sure he was talking about the same thing. I was like, ‘I might know something. What do you know?'”

D’Onofrio commented on Daredevil‘s cancellation alongside several other Marvel Netflix shows, saying the decision by Marvel was due largely to the then-upcoming Disney+ streaming service. “We understood what Marvel was doing because Disney+ [was] coming out,” D’Onofrio explained. “Conceptually, I think we were disappointed, but I think we all understood what was going on, and it sort of was inevitable. In this business, you learn to accept things because you know it’s a business in the end and there’s nothing you can really do about it.”

Fans have been expressing their support for Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page to make the leap into the MCU as well. Some fans believe Karen to still be a part of the Nelson, Murdock and Page law firm, which may have been how Matt became Peter Parker’s lawyer in No Way Home. Others, meanwhile, are calling for Karen to undergo a re-imaging as a partner at Jennifer Walters’ firm in the upcoming She-Hulk series.

All three seasons of Daredevil are streaming on Netflix. Spider-Man: No Way Home is in theaters now.
