She-Hulk director Kat Cairo explained how the upcoming series will bring more humor and heart to the MCU series.
Coiro will reportedly tackle six of the show’s 10 episodes, and she’ll also serve as an executive producer. So naturally, she has a deep understanding of the series’ tone. It’s been confirmed that the show will be akin to a half-hour sitcom, and the director expanded on how she’ll bring that to life within Marvel’s established world of superheroes.
“I never choose a project based on genre,” Coiro said. “And I actually don’t think very much about genre, I think about character. And I think about the emotional lives of the characters and, you know, can I bring something? Can I bring a mix of humor and heart to this? Because that is what I love to watch. And it’s what I love to work with. And so when I stepped into, you know, the Marvel playground — the cool thing about Marvel is that it is an ever-evolving universe and you have straight dramas, and you have very comedic films, and we are in that world where we’re definitely playing with a more comedic world, but it also is still part of Marvel land… I would say that I do what I always do, which is really focused on the characters and performance and finding the humor but also grounding it in reality.”
While very little has been confirmed when it comes to the plot of the show, what has been revealed points to a much more lighthearted series than fans have seen so far. She-Hulk will talk to Kevin Feige on the show, breaking the fourth wall much like in some of the comics to address the Marvel Studios boss. Star Tatiana Maslany also revealed she’ll sing on the series, so She-Hulk will clearly be a more carefree affair.
Of course, there will still be drama. After all, Tim Roth will return as Abomination. Though he seemed somewhat reformed during his cameo in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, he still has a long history as a villain. What’s more, Bruce Banner will also be back, and it seems unlikely he’ll be happy to see Emil Blonsky after their rumble in Harlem. And that’s not even getting to the mystery surrounding Bruce no longer being Professor Hulk, which could point to more troubles for the reluctant hero.
She-Hulk doesn’t yet have a release date, but it is confirmed to arrive sometime this year on Disney+.
