James Gunn Confirms Everyone’s Favorite Crappy DC Villain Is Peacemaker Canon

HBO Max’s Peacemaker is littered with Easter eggs and references for those quick enough to spot them. Now creator James Gunn has confirmed that an Easter Egg referring to Kite Man means that everyone’s favorite weak DC villain is indeed canon in the show’s world.

In Episode 5, “Monkey Dory,” a newspaper clipping could be seen that stated Christopher Smith/Peacemaker’s first appearance and victory as a superhero was by apprehending Kite Man. Gunn later shared a comic panel of Kite Man in action on social media, labelling it as “Canon” before adding the Peacemaker hashtag.

Charles Brown/Kite Man made his DC comics debut in Batman #133 (written by Bill Finger, penciled by Dick Sprang, inked by Charles Paris and lettered by Stan Starkman) which was released in August 1960. As the character has no superpowers, lacks in intelligence and is obsessed with kites, he’s widely seen as a joke, both by other DC supervillains and by fans.

Kite Man is a regular in the Harley Quinn animated show, where he’s voiced by Matt Oberg and was at one time engaged to Poison Ivy. Despite the engagement falling apart at the end of Season 2 and Ivy then finally hooking up with Quinn, co-showrunner Patrick Schumacker has plans for Kite Man to return. “I’ll probably piss a few people off by saying we hope Kite Man will return, because I know he’s got his detractors,” Shucker said of Season 3. The official Twitter account for Harley Quinn even joined in with the Kite Man mocking, by tweeting a picture of the newspaper clipping from Peacemaker with the caption “How embarrassing.”

A spinoff from The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker has proven to be a huge success for HBO Max, leading creator Gunn to tease the show stands a good chance of getting a second season. “We’re the biggest show in the world right now,” Gunn said. The final episode of Season 1, “It’s Cow or Never,” is due to air on Feb. 17 and at the time of writing, there is no indication whether HBO Max will give the go ahead for future seasons.

Gunn has expressed there is plenty more to explore when it comes to John Cena’s Christopher Smith. “At the end of The Suicide Squad, [Idris Elba’s] Bloodsport learns a lot. He’s a better person than he was at the beginning,” Gunn explained. He feels this is the case for many characters in the DC Extended Universe but by contrast, Peacemaker still “has a lot to learn.”

New episodes of Peacemaker arrive Thursdays on HBO Max.
