Eternals: Marvel Fan Uncovers a Hidden Detail Foreshadowing Sprite’s Betrayal

A keen-eyed Eternals fan spotted a subtle clue in the film, foreshadowing Sprite’s betrayal later on.

Posted on Reddit, a viewer noted, “When Sprite unsheathes her short sword near the beginning of the film (after deviant attack in London) you can read the Japanese katakana clearly: セルシノ.” They later explained, “It basically says Sersi-no (‘no’ is a possessive article). This hints at the blades purpose later in the film when Sprite stabs Sersi with it.” A Japanese viewer added, “The word on the blade is “セルシー”. This is simply the Japanese notation for Sersi… The letters on the surface of a Japanese sword usually mean the name of the maker of that sword. That means that the sword was made by Sersi.”

Toward the end of the film, Sprite — driven by her feelings for Ikaris — betrays the other Eternals and, during their attempt to stop the birth of the Celestial, Tiamut, stabs Sersi in the back with her sword. Sersi survives her wounds and eventually persuades Sprite to switch sides again. Sersi even used the power of the Uni-Mind to turn Sprite into a human, allowing the former Eternal to age and experience other aspects of life on Earth among humans.

Actor Lia McHugh, who played Sprite, recently discussed the Eternal’s future, saying she believes Sprite might be overwhelmed by all the new experiences. In an interview with CBR, McHugh said, “As a human, I honestly think she might go a little crazy… I think she may be a bit of a trouble child, if I’m being honest with you. I bet she’ll grow up and be so excited to do everything. I think about that sometimes, about where she would be when we come back in [the potential] Eternals 2.”

The actor then expanded on the reasons behind Sprite’s actions, suggesting that it was her desperation to be human that pushed her to take those actions. “What her motives are I think are a bit selfish. It’s very devastating,” McHugh explained. “I think a lot of her actions she does because she knows she won’t remember. She does hurt her family, but in her mind, she’s like, ‘But I need to forget, I’d do anything to forget this.’ And it’s just really sad and devastating. She’s so desperate to be a part of humanity and she wants it more than anything else that it’s just unbearable for her.”
