Harsh Realities Of Being A Rick & Morty Fan | CBR

Full of satire, pop-culture references, and serious sci-fi concepts, Rick And Morty has found a wide audience among fans of adult animated television. While taking clear inspiration from shows such as Futurama, Rick And Morty is a unique show that deserves much of the praise it receives. Year upon year, its audience grows and its reputation increases.

As more seasons release, fans of Rick And Morty have come to realize several underlying realities that complicate its broad appeal. As Rick And Morty’s relevancy grows, these traits become more apparent. These issues continue to spark conversations online and force many fans to re-examine their relationship to Rick And Morty.

8 Most Characters Won’t Return

One of Rick And Morty’s key strengths is its bright cast of characters, many of which are voiced by the talented Justin Roiland. Episodes are filled with dozens of humans and aliens, most of whom bear fascinating designs and mannerisms. This differentiates characters in a way rarely seen in similar adult animation. Rick And Morty’s huge side cast charms many fans who often predict how characters might appear in future episodes.

Most seasons of Rick And Morty are reluctant to bring back heroes or villains from previous episodes, let alone side characters. Barring outliers such as Mr. Poopy Butthole and Evil Morty, most characters appear once. They may get another appearance as a member of a crowd, but it’s unlikely.

7 The Writers Hate Certain Stories

Rick Sanchez is a mean and bitter man, which is the basis of most humor in Rick And Morty. Usually, Rick directs his anger in ways most fans find relatable. When Ricky disparages pointless rules, the audience laughs alongside him.

The writers of Rick And Morty occasionally take jabs at popular entertainment, placing Rick in stories filled with popular clichés which he decries as stupid. Some fans have struggled to reconcile after Rick And Morty praises explosions and fast cars and ridicules Marvel superhero movies and heist films.

6 Some Fans Give The Rest A Poor Reputation

In every community, a few loud and unruly voices create unfortunate stereotypes for the vast majority of its members. Rick And Morty’s fan base is no exception. During season three, certain fans became infamous for their propagation of the “Pickle Rick” and “Szechuan Sauce” memes.

These joined a still-popular copypasta describing a comically philosophical Rick And Morty fan as emblems of an immature fan base. Though most fans do not fit into these stereotypes, they must deal with the unfortunate reality of these few loud voices representing them.

5 Rick Sees His Affection As Weakness

Season three’s Rest And Ricklaxation provides one of the most fascinating science fiction concepts in the series. Rick and Morty separate into two halves of themselves, according to the psychological aspects they each considered to be “toxic.”

Toxic Morty is a sniveling coward who leaves Clean Morty a bold extrovert. Toxic Rick is full of spite and passion, leaving Clean Rick mellow and conscientious. Rest And Ricklaxation’s most shocking element is the revelation that Toxic Rick loves Morty. Rick considers affection to be a dangerous aspect of himself, a sickness worth casting away.

4 The Show Does Not Respect Its Audience

Dr. Wong from Rick & Morty

Rick And Morty is a brilliant show. It references classic movies and science-fiction concepts as well as modern cultural sensations. In many ways, Rick And Morty works hard to appeal to a broad audience. However, Rick And Morty also insults its audience on several occasions.

The most infamous example comes at the end of season three. Mr. Poopy Butthole appears with his family and mentions his accomplishments over the past year. He asks the audience, “What did you do while you were waiting? Hopefully you didn’t f*** around and waste your life!” While many fans found this endearing, others felt it was evidence of how Rick And Morty views its audience.

3 Morty Will Never Find Love

A classic rule of writing is that a character should be separated from what they desire as long as possible. In a long-running show like Rick And Morty, the status quo requires Morty’s attempts to find a girlfriend to be thwarted week upon week.

The failures of Morty’s relationships are usually far more traumatic than in similar shows. Morty’s girlfriends have been mutated or violently murdered on several occasions. He has twice lived out a long relationship only to have those years torn away from him. Therefore, the future in which he is happy can never come to be.

2 Jerry Will Always Be A Punching Bag

Rick And Morty is brutal to Jerry, more so than any other character. When Jerry needs to be brave, he is a coward. Wolves devour his unemployment checks while the wind whispers to him that he’s a loser. Jerry drags everyone down to his level, and he gloats whenever he has the slightest authority over someone else.

Rick And Morty piles hateable attributes upon Jerry, then punishes him for bearing them. Season five allows Rick a rare moment of fondness for Jerry, leading some fans to speculate Rick And Morty is taking the character in a new direction.

1 Rick Will Always Be Right

Rick’s smug warnings, plans, and predictions always pay off in his favor – with the very few exceptions which showcase how his intelligence and callousness are a burden. When other characters push back against him or try to prove their independence, they are always humiliated and forced to acknowledge that Rick knew better all along.

Sometimes the universe seems to conspire to prove Rick is right. Often, he actively sabotages the lives of those around him to prove his superiority. He is willing to enable Morty to ruin lives and endure horrific trauma just to prove a point, even when this causes the death or exploitation of countless innocent people.
