Pokémon is mainly focused on the battles between trainers using their powerful companion creatures. But throughout the franchise’s history, there have been numerous other ways for players to use their Pokémon. Among these are the Contests, first introduced in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald as Pokémon Contest Spectaculars.
They were revamped in the Generation IV games as Pokémon Super Contests, which return in the recent Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes. These contests have Pokémon use their moves to impress a panel of judges rather than do battle. Contests come in five different types, and the Cool category favors Pokémon who are slick, aggressive, and powerful.
10 Lucario Has Steel And Fighting Type Moves To Help Keep It Cool
Fighting and Steel types are well suited to the Cool contest category, so Lucario is a perfect contender. It can use several of the most effective Cool moves, like Brick Break and High Jump Kick. Lucario also has several supportive moves, like Focus Energy to double its next score or Detect to raise the score if the Voltage is too low. Finally, it is one of the few Pokémon capable of using Reversal, enabling it to earn double Appeal on the final performance.
9 Drapion’s Poison And Speed Let It Blast Ahead
Drapion is a very cool Pokémon, so it makes sense that it competes well in the Cool contest category. There are a surprising number of Poison type moves in the top levels of the Cool category, including the powerful Cross Poison. Drapion also has access to Dark Pulse, which can be used in contests to earn four Appeal if used on the first turn. It can also learn Agility, which earns two Appeal and allows the user to perform first in the next turn.
8 Carnivine Uses The Power Of Cool Plants
Several of the most high-scoring Cool moves for Super Contests are Grass type moves. Carnivine can learn Razor Leaf, Vine Whip, and Cut, all able to score three Appeal.
Solar Beam has the potential to earn up to four Appeal as long as no other Pokémon have chosen the same judge. Surprisingly, Carnivine cannot learn Leaf Blade, which presents an unfortunate gap in its Cool move roster, but it is a capable contestant nonetheless.
7 Tentacruel Evolves From Tentacool, An Apt Name
Tentacruel makes good use of the Poison type Cool moves, able to pull off the powerful Cross Poison to earn Appeal. It also has access to Rapid Spin, allowing it to earn extra Appeal as long as it moves first. This can be combined with Double Team, which allows the user to move first on the following turn. Tentacruel has access to a wide variety of Cool moves that allow it to set up powerful combo turns and rocket towards the lead.
6 Abomasnow Uses Avalanche To Cool It All Down
There are very few Ice type moves represented among the Cool moves, but Avalanche is one of note. It scores only two Appeal, but it doubles the score if used on the final performance. Razor Leaf and Bullet Seed can be used to rack up Appeal before the final turn, making Abomasnow a decent competitor. Ice types tend to be better suited to the Beautiful category than the Cool category, but Abomasnow is able to bridge the gap.
5 Dragonite Is The Coolest Type Of All
Dragonite has access to some of the best Cool moves in the game. Dragon Rage, Hyper Voice, and Twister all earn three Appeal, while Outrage earns only two Appeal but can be used two turns in a row. Hyper Beam is a powerful move that will earn a titanic five Appeal so long as the Pokémon that goes before hits max Voltage.
Finally, Dragonite can learn Dragon Dance to buff up its moves on future turns. Dragonite learns an impressive combination of moves that make it a great candidate for Coolest Pokémon around.
4 Shiftry Is Surprisingly Versatile
Despite being a Grass/Dark type, Shiftry learns an impressive number of Flying type moves. Aerial Ace and Air Slash earn four Appeal as long as the Pokémon moves first. Shiftry is able to set itself up with a Quick Attack or Double Team to ensure it moves first and scores big. If all else fails, Shiftry can fall back on a Razor Leaf or Brick Break to score a steady amount of Appeal. This Pokémon is available in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond’s Grand Underground in its first form, Seedot.
3 Breloom Packs A Punch
It can use several of the most appealing Cool moves, including Brick Break and High Jump Kick. These moves generate a large amount of appeal, helping Breloom push to the front of the contest. It can also use Bullet Seed, gaining two Appeal and usable twice in a row.
Finally, Breloom has access to False Swipe, which allows it to raise the score so long as the Voltage is low. Breloom is a decent all-around Cool competitor able to drive toward victory.
2 Gliscor Can Make An All Or Nothing Attack
Gliscor has a unique trick up its sleeve in Cool contsts. The Guillotine move has a low accuracy in battle, but results in an instant KO if it hits. Similarly, it is a risky proposition in Contests. It scores no Appeal unless every Pokémon in the Contest chooses the same judge. In this case, it earns an astonishing 15 Appeal. This is a risky strategy, but Gliscor also has access to Aerial Ace, Steel Wing, and Wing Attack as more reliable ways to generate Appeal.
1 Skarmory Has Access To Tons Of Cool Moves
Like Gliscor, Skarmory has a special move that it can use to great effect in Cool contests. It can use Roost to raise the Voltage of the Contest, which doesn’t earn any Appeal by itself but has the potential to earn up to eight if used at the right time and on the right judge. In addition to this tactically important move, Skarmory has access to Agility, Slash, Leer, Wing Attack, and Steel Wing, all powerful Cool contest actions.
