Legend of Zelda Fan Recreates Ocarina of Time in Unreal Engine 5 – And It’s Glorious

A dedicated Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time fan revealed an Unreal Engine 5 remake of one of the game’s beloved locations.

The video, posted to YouTube, starts with a brief introduction from user RwanLink. He explains that he consulted photos of real-life locations when creating his version of the game’s famous lake: “I realized that Lake Hylia doesn’t have a proper theme in Zelda: Ocarina of Time, so I mostly composed something special inspired by the visuals I picked.” The result is a reinterpretation of Lake Hylia that teems with life.

The remainder of the video showcases his work. It begins with a cut scene, complete with voice acting, in which Navi urges a relaxed Link to get moving, and then the camera pans across the updated Lake Hylia. Flowers bloom in grass that was barren in the Nintendo 64 original, and sunlight dances on the water’s surface.

Fans are even treated to a fleeting glimpse of Princess Zelda herself before Link rushes to aim his bow at the rising sun in order to obtain the fire arrows. The rest of the video shows gameplay-style footage of Link strolling across the detailed landscape and swimming across the lake, equipped with his Hylian shield and Master Sword. In the distance, mountains hint at a large open-world in the vein of Breath of the Wild.

RwanLink’s Lake Hylia remake follows his Unreal Engine 5 upgrade of Kakariko Village, another beloved location from Ocarina of Time. Fans reacted with overwhelming positivity to both videos, with many expressing their nostalgia at seeing the updated locations.

Unreal Engine 5 is the fifth installment of Epic Games’ Unreal game engine. Scheduled for full release in early 2022, it allows developers to import highly-detailed photographic source material into games. It’s become something of a trend to use Unreal Engine 5 to reimagine classic games: One Simpsons fan updated The Simpsons: Hit & Run, and a recent video reveals an impressive remake of Metal Gear Solid 2’s opening sequence.

Nintendo released The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in 1998 for the Nintendo 64 and later remade the game for the 3DS. Gamers frequently cite it as one of the greatest games of all time, with several YouTube users dedicated to creating high-resolution remakes of locations from the classic title. There are also more modest tributes, such as a charming Ocarina of Time cross-stitch, which features the notes of the game’s famous melodies.
