‘The Movie’ Trends on Twitter Thanks to a Vague Dwayne Johnson Announcement

Professional wrestler turned action movie star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson recently revealed that he is slated to star in a major video game movie, though did not provide any specifics on the project. The vagueness of this announcement caused the phrase “The Movie,” to trend on Twitter, with fans speculating — though mostly joking — about which video game character Johnson could be playing.

Most of the tweets were clearly made in jest, suggesting that Johnson could be starring in such (likely nonexistent) projects as “Devil May Cry: The Movie” (as Vergil), “Minecraft: The Movie” (as an Iron Golem), “No More Heroes: The Movie” (as Travis Touchdown) or “Persona 4: The Movie” (as Izanagi). One particularly humorous post says Johnson could star in “Cooking Mama: The Movie,” that way fans can “smell what The Rock is cooking,” a reference to one of the Great One’s famous wrestling catchphrases. Countless other lighthearted posts on the matter have been made as well.

That said, a few serious suggestions were thrown into the mix as well. Most notably, in addition to Johnson’s announcement causing “The Movie” to trend, it also caused Gears of War to trend. Gears of War is a popular series of post-apocalyptic third-person shooter games that have been released exclusively on Xbox consoles since 2006. Dave Bautista, another action star who got his start in pro wrestling, famously lobbied to portray protagonist Marcus Fenix in a Gear of War film, though has been unsuccessful thus far.

The various Twitter conversations were spurred on by Johnson’s recent interview with Men’s Journal. “I can’t tell you which game in particular we’re doing, but there will be an announcement this year,” he said. “We’re going to bring one of the biggest, most badass games to the screen — one that I’ve played for years.” Johnson is certainly no stranger to video game movies, with one of his earliest roles being in the 2005 film adaptation of Doom.

While it remains to be seen what video game-based project Johnson is working on next, the former WWE Champion certainly has some big things coming down the pipeline. Currently, Johnson is gearing up for the release of the DC Extended Universe film Black Adam, in which he stars as the titular antihero. Black Adam is scheduled to hit theaters on July 29. Johnson’s involvement with DC also extends to the animated realm, with the actor providing the voice for Krypto the Superdog in the film DC League of Super-Pets, due for release on May 20.
