The first official trailer for Disney+’s upcoming Moon Knight series has finally been released, giving audiences a proper first look at the mind-bending action, mystical villains and superhero action the show has in store.
On top of the exciting action sequences, the trailer hints at Marc Spector’s struggle with mental health, having to cope with dissociative identity disorder (DID), including a moment in which Spector answers the phone and doesn’t recognize his own name.
The clip also reveals more of star Ethan Hawke’s mysterious new villain, a role that had been kept a secret until now. While Hawke’s character isn’t named in the clip, the captions on the trailer reveal him to be Dr. Arthur Harrow, who Moon Knight readers know as a mad scientist who was in the running to win the Nobel Prize until his involvement with Nazi experiments during World War II was revealed.
While the interactions between Harrow and Spector are limited in the first trailer, Harrow is shown in a crowd of people, and later telling Spector, “It must be very difficult. The voices in your head. There’s chaos in you. Embrace the chaos.” Other scenes show Spector trying to figure how who he is, screaming at himself into a mirror and ultimately transforming into the titular Moon Knight.
Fans have been eagerly anticipating the first trailer for some time. The series was officially announced in August 2019 at D23, though star Isaac’s involvement as Spector was only the subject of heavy speculation. He was eventually confirmed to be playing the titular hero in May 2021. Several months later, a video of Isaac in costume as Moon Knight leaked, though there were questions as to the authenticity of the clip.
In November, Disney released a first look at Moon Knight, teasing Marc Spector’s struggle and life as a vigilante through brief snippets. More recently, a teaser clip announced the arrival of the full trailer, giving audiences a first look at Hawke’s villain and more of the strange and mystical world of Moon Knight.
Isaac previously touched on portraying Marc Spector and his enthusiasm for it, though he also called it one of the most challenging roles of his career. In a previous interview, the actor stated, “I could not wait to get to set, and it was the biggest workload I’ve ever had in my career and most challenging; by the sheer amount of stuff we had to do in eight months, and even yet, I couldn’t wait to get to set and work.” While Isaac has never divulged any specific details concerning the character or the plot of Moon Knight, he has also teased, “I thought there was an incredibly unusual story to tell within the world of, you know, the superhero language.”
Moon Knight was created by Doug Moench and Don Perlin and made his debut in Werewolf by Night #32 in 1975. The character was originally depicted as a marine-turned-mercenary who suffers from dissociative identity disorder and becomes the conduit for the Egyptian moon god Khonshu after an accident leaves him near-dead. Until recent decades, there was some debate concerning whether or not Khonshu was in fact a god watching over the superhero, or if the deity was yet another entity created by Spector.
Created by Jeremy Slater, Moon Knight is set to premiere on March 30 on Disney+.
