A series of classic PlayStation 3 games have reportedly been discovered on the PlayStation 5‘s digital store.
According to video game journalist Jordan Middler, who originally posted about the find on Twitter, the title which was initially discovered was Dead or Alive 5, a popular fighting game that still has a dedicated, passionate following. Following this, a user on the forum site ResetEra posted an image of what appear to be Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones and The Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, both of which are seemingly available on the PS5. Initial speculation focused on the fact that these games may be a part of PlayStation Now, Sony’s cloud-based gaming service, yet none of them appear to be streamable.
According to Middler, the discovered games can be added to the user’s Favorites list or Wishlist but neither can be bought. To add further fuel to the flames, none of the titles have background art, simply placeholder images. Some of the shared screenshots seemingly include prices but fans are unable to discern whether the specified amount relates to a PS Now subscription or an individual purpose.
While this discovery may amount to nothing in the future, users are speculating that this supposed leak is an indication that Sony is ramping up to formally announce their own take on Xbox Game Pass. According to industry insiders, PlayStation is actively developing a subscription service that will give gamers “access to a catalog of modern and classic games.” This plan, which will be available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, will come in a variety of tiers that increase in price. The first category will include all the normal PlayStation Plus benefits, while the second tier will allow users access to a library of PS4 and PS5 games. The third, most expensive option will reportedly add, “extended demos, game streaming and a library of classic PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP games.” Sony has yet to comment on this report and this service, whether it exists or not, doesn’t have a release date.
It’s no wonder Sony is potentially looking at reworking PlayStation’s subscription plan given how popular Xbox Game Pass is amongst fans. The service grants users access to a large library of both new and old games with many launching directly through the service. The service is considered by many to be the main draw of owning an Xbox Series X|S and is recommended for anyone looking to engage in Microsoft’s gaming ecosystem.
