The Muppets Trend As Fans Demand They Host This Year’s Oscars

When The Academy asked for hypothetical suggestions for who should host the Oscars, it probably expected an A-list movie star to be the top choice. Instead, so many fans suggested the Muppets that they became a trending topic.

The 94th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles on March 27. Although The Academy confirmed that the ceremony will have a host, at the time of writing none have been announced. Many fans responded to the Academy’s call for a host to say they want the Muppets and won’t be happy with anyone else.

As support for the Muppets grew online and they began to trend, several users saw this as even more of a reason to give the hosting gig to Jim Henson’s lovable creations. Some fans pointed out that both ABC, the network the Oscars ceremony is broadcast on, and the Muppets themselves are owned by Disney, making the collaboration even easier to manage. Other fans promised to watch the ceremony if the Muppets hosted and even suggested some skits they would like to see from Kermit and friends.

The Walt Disney Company purchased The Jim Henson Company in 2004 and rebranded all of the Muppet assets purchased as The Muppets Studio. A new logo was released for the studio in August 2021, alongside a promise for new projects in the months to come. Muppets Haunted Mansion was released on the Disney+ streaming service on Oct. 8 and was based on the Disneyland ride of the same name. The show saw Will Arnett’s Ghost Host dare Gonzo the Great and Pepé the King Prawn to spend a night in the house.

Although there are plans for more Muppets content in the future, it will be without iconic puppeteer and voice actor Frank Oz. He was the original voice actor for many mainstays of the Muppet cast as well as characters on Sesame Street, but has previously stated that Disney doesn’t want him to return.

“I’d love to do the Muppets again but Disney doesn’t want me, and Sesame Street hasn’t asked me for 10 years,” Oz explained. “They don’t want me because I won’t follow orders and I won’t do the kind of Muppets they believe in.” One Disney property that did welcome Oz back was Star Wars, as he not only returned as the voice of Yoda in 2017’s The Last Jedi but was also on set as Yoda’s puppeteer.
