Hawkeye’s Pizza Dog Celebrates Premiere With a Bow of Her Own

Today, Nov. 24, isn’t just the premiere date of Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye — it’s also the birthday of Jolt, the pup that plays Lucky the Pizza Dog on the Disney+ original series.

Jolt celebrated the dual occasion with a two-photo post to her official Instagram account. In the first photo, Jolt is seen standing in front of a Hawkeye poster while holding a toy bow and arrow in her mouth. The second photo, meanwhile, sees Jolt next to her birthday cake, which is designed to look like a pizza. “Two important things happened on today’s date: 1. Me! (Four years ago!) 2. HawkFREAKINGeye! #luckiestdogalive,” the caption reads.

Lucky the Pizza Dog first appeared in 2012’s Hawkeye #1, the first issue in writer Matt Fraction and artist David Aja’s acclaimed run on the Marvel Comics title. Originally named Arrow, Lucky belonged to Ivan Banionis and his gang, the Tracksuit Draculas — which Clint Barton/Hawkeye refers to as the “Tracksuit Mafia.”

In the comics, Clint showed kindness to Arrow, who returned the favor by turning on Ivan’s men and saving Clint’s life. The Tracksuit Draculas then punished Arrow by beating him and throwing him into traffic, at which point Clint rushed the dog to the vet for emergency surgery. Arrow survived, though lost the use of his left eye. Nevertheless, Clint adopted Arrow, re-naming him Lucky. While living with Clint and his protégé, Kate Bishop/Hawkeye, Lucky takes a liking to pizza, earning himself the nickname of “Pizza Dog.”

Set after the events of the 2019 Marvel Studios film Avengers: Endgame, Disney+’s Hawkeye largely takes its cues from Fraction and Aja’s comics. The show stars Marvel Cinematic Universe mainstay Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), who trains Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) to take up the mantle of Hawkeye. Lucky and the Tracksuit Mafia factor into the story as well, with the aforementioned Ivan being portrayed by Aleks Paunovic. The show also stars Alaqua Cox as the Marvel Comics character Maya Lopez/Echo, who is slated to get her very own spinoff series on Disney+.

The first two episodes of Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye are streaming now on Disney+. The series will run for a total of six episodes and is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday, Dec. 22.
