The Avengers consist of several independently strong individuals with big personalities. They’re all superheroes in their own right, so it’s hard to believe they’d willingly fall behind the leadership of one of their peers. Nevertheless, The Avengers have shown that they’re able to put aside their pride when it matters and rally behind someone they believe in.
Most fans view Steve Rogers as the unofficial leader of the Avengers. And while he’s consistently referred to as “the boss,” he isn’t the only person the team looks to for direction. Tony Stark also takes on a leadership role whenever necessary, taking point in difficult situations and using his intelligence to find the most advantageous outcomes. Both Steve and Tony have led The Avengers to numerous victories, and although their personalities and methods differ, it’s still apparent that both these men make excellent leaders.
10 Iron Man: Tony Doesn’t Mind Being The Bad Guy
Tony’s methods aren’t always understood. Moreover, it doesn’t help that he rarely feels the need to explain himself, which sometimes leads to a lack of trust between him and his teammates. However, Tony does show an understanding that he might face resistance from other team members for his more extreme plans.
In their fight against Ultron, The Avengers were worried that Tony had weaponized a force they couldn’t control. His accidental creation of Ultron made them skeptical of his motives. However, with Thor’s help and support, Vision was created and managed to defeat Ultron. The Avengers ultimately realized that Tony wanted to better prepare them for battles against unknown future threats.
9 Captain America: Steve Is Well Organized & Likes To Create Plans Of Attack
Steve doesn’t like heading into battle unprepared. He prefers to have a plan in place before he faces his enemies. To Steve, reckless behavior and a lack of planning could lead to the loss or death of a comrade.
Steve cares about the people he enters into battle with more than himself. Given that he has superhuman strength and a high tech weapon, he’s more durable than most, but this doesn’t make him calculate the risks any less.
8 Iron Man: Tony’s Wealth Gives The Team Access To Valuable Resources
Tony is extremely wealthy. Taking over Stark Industries and continuing his father’s work made him a billionaire. As a result, he has access to unlimited resources. The Avengers not only have access to the weapons Tony has already created, they have access to any new weapons he contrives. Furthermore, Tony has given The Avengers their own personal headquarters. The Avengers Compound is a renovated facility that was used for Stark Industries. Now, it’s a safe space for The Avengers to create battle strategies and regroup.
7 Captain America: Steve Creates New Plans Of Action During Battle
When fighting international criminals or extraterrestrial villains, things don’t always go as planned. After fighting against an army of aliens led by Loki, The Avengers realized they’d have to face threats they could barely imagine. Now when they experience setbacks in the heat of battle, they fallback, regroup, and come up with a new offensive plan. Captain America is particularly good at checking in with his team and coming up with new ways to subdue their enemies.
6 Iron Man: Tony Sided With The Government Even If It Meant Giving Up The Team’s Freedom
After the tragedy that occurred in Sokovia, Tony was approached by Miriam Sharpe. Sharpe blamed Tony for the death of her son, Charlie Spencer – an exchange that had a significant impact on Tony, who felt incredibly guilty. His guilt is what caused him to side with the government when they proposed an accountability initiative that placed The Avengers under their authority.
The Avengers didn’t all agree with this new initiative, and whether it was right or wrong is subjective. However, Tony’s willingness to put his pride aside and give up his liberties as a superhero was nothing short of selfless. He cared about the welfare of civilians and wanted to do a better job of protecting them. Sometimes, being a great leader means knowing when to take a step back.
5 Captain America: Steve Motivates His Team
When facing enemies with considerable amounts of strength and power, one could easily become frightened and intimidated. Villains like Thanos and Ultron have shown that they’re ruthless and willing to do anything necessary to achieve their nefarious goals. When The Avengers and other agents or soldiers discover their terrifying plans, going up against them can seem daunting. None of this is lost on Steve. Whether it’s The Avengers, military troops, or the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Captain America always reminds his troops that they have the strength and heart to defeat their adversaries.
4 Iron Man: Tony Is A Genius
Tony possesses an impressive level of intellect. He’s able to comprehend complex concepts involving physics, dimensional travel, and technological advancements. He not only understands these topics, he’s able to apply them when creating his own inventions and easily absorbs new scientific developments regarding his opponents weaponry. Tony is consistently consulted on scientific content because he’s an expert. He is able to give The Avengers the advantages they need by explaining how unfamiliar weapons work and how to counter them. Without Tony, The Avengers would be at a significant disadvantage when facing off against foreign enemies.
3 Captain America: Steve Is Adamant About Working As A Team
Steve values fairness and respect. Even though he has the presence of a leader, he doesn’t belittle his peers. Agents like Maria Hill will occasionally debrief Captain America first, but he still wants everyone to know everything he does.
Steve is adamant about The Avengers working as a team and gets upset whenever he thinks someone is acting on their own. His military background has contributed to this structured mindset, making him the perfect combination of leader and teammate. He believes a team is stronger when it works together.
2 Iron Man: Tony Willingly Sacrificed His Life, Twice
Tony is often seen as arrogant and selfish, and his pride in his intellect and wealth has caused some members of The Avengers to see him in a negative light. However, Tony is actually a selfless individual who cares about the welfare of others. On his first mission as an Avenger, Tony willingly flew into space to release a missile that stopped the Chitauri invading earth. Thankfully, he survived.
Unfortunately, Tony wasn’t as lucky the second time he risked his life. Although he was fortunate enough to survive Thanos’ snap and start a family with Pepper, he used the gauntlet installed in his suit to complete The Final Snap in Endgame – an act that took his life. He knew it would kill him, but he still sacrificed himself to save the world.
1 Captain America: Steve Is The Symbol Of Freedom
As a heroic symbol of freedom, Steve inspires people to stand and face all kinds of danger with him. He also represents hope and justice, which are commendable assets in a leader. Steve’s main motivation is to use his enhanced physical being to fight and protect people. He volunteered for the Super Soldier Project because he didn’t feel right staying at home when there were men risking their lives in the war. And as a genetically enhanced super human leading the charge, people feel empowered just being near him.
