The 10 Most Disliked Characters From The Office | CBR

NBC’s hit series The Office developed an incredibly loyal fanbase that continues to stream the show on repeat years after the final season aired. This is largely due to the cast of relatable and loveable characters who worked at the fictional Dunder Mifflin paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

However, not all of the characters who made their way through The Office were as loved as others, and some of them were downright hated by both fans and other characters on the show. That said, it’s not hard to see why they became some of the most hated characters on television.

10 Nellie Bertram Struggled To Find Her Place In The Office

Nellie Bertram on The Office

Nellie Bertram appeared a few times throughout the series before she became a regular in the offices of Dunder Mifflin, which didn’t endear her to fans. She was interviewed for the Regional Manager position following the loss of Michael Scott, and was seen again when office staff was sent to Florida to open a new ill-fated Sabre electronics store.

Nellie eventually returned to Dunder Mifflin and worked her way into a position that never quite sat well with some fans, or with other office employees like Andy Bernard whose job she tried to steal. However, some of the Dunder Mifflin employees began to warm up to her by the end of the series.

9 Clark Green Was Problematic And One Of The Worst New Hires

Clark Green on The Office

The Office began to add a few new faces in the later seasons of The Office as characters moved on from Dunder Mifflin, which included young Clark Green. Clark was an office worker who hoped to become a salesperson that led him to form a bond with Dwight Schrute.

However, Clark was also problematic and attempted to manipulate naive receptionist Erin into coming to his house to film an audition for a news program while he attempted to seduce her. Clark was never really accepted by fans and his early actions made it hard to appreciate the character’s small growth over the final season.

8 Todd Packer Was Inappropriate And Rude To Everyone

Todd Packer on The Office

Dunder Mifflin had a couple of traveling salesmen that worked for the Scranton Branch which included one of Michael Scott’s old friends Todd Packer. Packer appeared periodically and was definitely written so that fans would hate him, as almost everyone at Dunder Mifflin felt the same way.

Packer was fond of practical jokes that were in poor taste, off-color humor and inappropriate office antics that became worse with almost every appearance. When he finally returned with a pledge that he was attempting to make amends for his past behavior, he offered cupcakes to the staff that was dosed with either laxatives or hallucinogens that definitely didn’t earn him many friends.

7 Jan Levinson Was The Worst Person Michael Dated On The Series

Michael Scott dated a few different women on The Office, though his worst relationship was with his former boss Jan Levinson. Not only was she domineering and controlling, Jan was only with Michael Scott to help her deal with some of her own problems at the advice of her therapist.

Every time Jan returned, fans found new reasons to dislike the character – whether it was through her odd relationship with her daughter and inappropriate love of younger men like Clark Green or her former assistant Hunter.

6 Robert California Was Disliked Due To His Odd Behaviour

Robert California on The Office

After Michael Scott left the job of Regional manager, there were a few characters introduced that attempted to take the place of arguably the most memorable star of The Office. Robert California was a savvy but eccentric businessman who interviewed for the position and won it, though he immediately turned it down and talked his way into becoming CEO of Sabre instead.

California’s odd behavior and sex-fueled conversations made him one of the most unusual characters on The Office which caused a number of fans to dislike his time on the show. He eventually disappeared following the collapse of Sabre when he left to mentor young international gymnasts in his usual creepy fashion.

5 Cathy Simms Tried To Get Jim to Cheat On Pam With Her

Cathy and Jim on The Office

The relationship between Jim Halpert and Pam Beesly was one of the series main storylines as fans watched it grow over the years as they fell in love, became happily married, and started a family. However, when Pam left for maternity leave, a new girl was brought in named Cathy Simms who threatened to throw a cog in the works.

Cathy and Jim were teamed up and sent to Florida to work on the new Sabre line, and she attempted on more than one occasion to seduce Jim into cheating on his wife with her. This didn’t make fans happy and she quickly became one of the most hated characters on The Office.

4 Gabe Lewis Was Creepy And Hated By The Entire Office

When Dunder Mifflin was sold to the printer company Sabre, they welcomed a new liaison named Gabe Lewis who quickly earned the ire of his co-workers due to his strict devotion to company policy that led to a number of unwelcome changes in the office.

Gabe tried to make friends in the office but mostly served to make enemies, especially when he started dating Erin which led to problems with Andy Bernard. Things worsened after the relationship ended and Gabe began to get more creepy and possessive, which ultimately led to him leaving The Office.

3 Brian The Sound Guy Was Introduced Just To Cause Problems

Brian the Sound Guy on The Office

The premise of The Office involved a crew of documentarians who were following the daily lives of Dunder Mifflin employees, though it was only in the last season that the filmmakers were shown and became a part of the storyline. Brian was a sound guy who developed feelings for Pam, which caused him to break the rules and step in to comfort or even protect her.

Brian was revealed to have been friends with Jim and Pam off-camera, though things took a dark turn when he lost his job and relationship which led him to reveal his feelings to Pam. The character seemed introduced only to cause problems in Jim and Pam’s relationship and he quickly became a hated addition to the series.

2 Deangelo Vickers Was Hated Because He Replaced Michael Scott

Deangelo Vickers on The Office

The first Regional Manager to take on the role after Michael Scott was Deangelo Vickers, who briefly worked alongside the former Dunder Mifflin boss to better acclimate himself to the working environment of The Office. However, Vickers didn’t have much time for the antics of Michael Scott or his management style and began to change the atmosphere of the office.

Deangelo picked favorites and judged the staff members incorrectly based on his own prejudices, which caused him to make a few enemies at Dunder Mifflin. His time on The Office was short-lived, and while it introduced a different aspect to the show, most fans were happy to see him leave.

1 Ryan Howard Was One Of The Worst Employees On The Show

While most of the The Office‘s main cast are loveable in their own way, there’s no denying that Ryan Howard was one of the worst employees on the series. He started as office temp before he moved to salesmen and nearly ruined his career with a promotion to the New York office, though Michael Scott kept bringing back his favored employee.

Ryan Howard used others for his own gain and showcased a number of deplorable character traits that ultimately had him abandon his own infant child in the finale. As if there wasn’t enough reason to dislike Ryan.
