Season 2 of Hanna really expanded the mythos, as the TV show detailed more about the female assassins in the CIA’s Utrax program. We saw a lot of the conditioning of the young women, with teens like Clara wanting out, but others like Jules and Sandy buying into the warped vision of the handler, Carmichael. However, Hanna rocked the foundations of the program by coming back home with Marissa, deposing Carmichael along the way. Seeing as he’s still in the program, let’s look at who could be his deadly weapon in Season 3 as he tries to even the playing field.
Carmichael accidentally leaked info on Utrax’s targets in Season 2. This is how Hanna and Marissa got him demoted, and their return is only a front. Their real plan is to infiltrate and break the program for good. But Carmichael is unlikely to take this defeat lying down. Instead, he’s opting to play possum for now and cooperate, as they’ve got him blackmailed. But you can’t trust a man like him.
The first candidate he can ally with is Jules, someone very devoted to Utrax. She already posed as a university student during her trial in Season 2, pulling off a big hit to ensure the CIA’s political partners were protected. The mission involved seducing an older woman, all before returning home as cold as ice, proving she was the top dog. She does hate Hanna, or any traitor who’d leave, but while she’s physically equipped, she isn’t as mentally vulnerable as Carmichael would like.
This leads to the second candidate — someone who isn’t a free, independent and critical thinker — Sandy. She was already used by Carmichael in a college trial last season, and he even joined her in Spain, suggesting he could fill the gap in her soul.
She’s got immense daddy issues, which he can further exploit in Season 3 to have her take Hanna and Marissa out. Chances are he’ll use her and Jules, but Jules does believe in national security, so if she thinks Carmichael and his bosses, the Pioneers, are bad for America, she can turn on them and even be swayed to Hanna’s vision.
Sandy, though, can be reprogrammed and gaslit with ease, desperate for the approval of a parental figure. She also fits what the sinister Carmichael wants in terms of total manipulation, as he loves being a puppet master. He’s already planted seeds she’ll be a daughter, not a pawn, and despite the signs that he’s using her, Sandy believes him, because she’s desperate for a family.
This neediness makes her vulnerable and obsessively loyal, which means that even if she learns Utrax is evil, she won’t break away from Carmichael. In that sense, she’s the war robot he needs and seeing as Sandy already wants Hanna and Marissa dead, her interests match Carmichael’s revenge scheme. Ultimately, he might even use new faces but he’ll want someone familiar, someone he’s intimate with, and someone who views him as a god, which is more Sandy than Jules.
