WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Season 1 of Hit-Monkey, now streaming on Hulu.
In Hulu’s Hit-Monkey, a snow monkey goes on a blood-soaked quest for revenge in Japan. He wants to destroy the politician Ozu, who orchestrated a hit that killed his clan off, eventually partnering with the ghost of an assassin, Bryce, who also died in the massacre. However, as Season 1 ends, we discover a dark truth lies behind the tragedy, leading to a gory finale that puts both guys in danger.
Who Is the Villain of Hit-Monkey?
When Hit-Monkey cuts a path to Ozu, Bryce realizes something’s off. Ozu admits he didn’t green-light the hit on the Prime Ministerial candidate, Takahara, as he was already ahead of Takahara at the polls. Bryce quickly deduces it was Takahara’s right-hand man, Shinji, who backstabbed his partner.
This leads to the clean-up job that killed Bryce, as he recuperated with Hit-Monkey’s family, causing them to turn their gaze on Shinji. However, they find it tough to get to him in Tokyo as the cops are surrounding his high-rise, with Shinji gaining sympathy votes to now become Japan’s Prime Minister.
What Happens In Hit-Monkey’s Season 1 Finale Battle?
Haruka, a good cop, meets with Bryce and Hit-Monkey, who speak to her using an assassin spirit, Yuki. They have Japan’s best interests at heart, so they try to sneak Hit-Monkey in, but a riot ensues when Silver Samurai susses out the ruse. His job’s to protect the Prime Minister, so he thinks it’s an unlawful hit, which causes a massive brawl, as Yuki and Fat Cobra subdue the samurai to help Hit-Monkey out.
Bryce and Hit-Monkey end up facing Lady Bullseye, who’s patiently waiting for them. She’s part of the contingent Shinji’s using in the shadows, and she has a grudge against the duo, using salt to manifest Bryce’s corporeal form. He actually hit on her years ago, so she hates him, cutting him and Hit-Monkey up badly. Luckily, Bryce distracts her long enough for Haruka to plant several bullets in Lady Bullseye, gaining vengeance as the villain killed her partner, Ito, early on this season.
What Happens to Bryce In Hit-Monkey?
As this melee occurs, Hit-Monkey confronts Shinji; although, he’s protected by his niece, Akiko. She helped Hit-Monkey throughout the show, as she thought Ozu was the enemy, but when Haruka and Bryce come to the rooftop, she doesn’t believe Shinji’s corrupt. Nonetheless, Hit-Monkey has set the chopper ablaze and has his gun pointed to Shinji’s head, but Bryce begs him not to become this monster. As Hit-Monkey lowers his gun, it redeems Bryce, whose soul finally ascends.
However, an arrested Shinji sneaks Haruka’s gun from her waist, and just as he’s about to shoot her, Hit-Monkey puts a bullet through his skull. Without Bryce around, he has no one to control his impulse to kill; although, it’s in the name of justice. Akiko then turns on him, vowing his destruction because she thought her uncle was going to save Japan. Meanwhile, Haruka secrets the monkey away since she knows he’s the hero here, but he will soon be hunted for killing the nation’s leader.
What Is Hit-Monkey and Bryce’s Future?
Haruka hides the monkey on a plane, sneaking him out of Japan and vowing to clear his name, but Bryce’s ghost returns to greet his drunk buddy in the storage unit. It turns out, Bryce got bored and signed a deal with the Devil to come back and help Hit-Monkey. This time, though, he’s got telekinesis, but he does need to perfect it for the battles to come.
The season ends on an ominous note; however, as Akiko’s in the morgue with her uncle’s body, she moseys over to Lady Bullseye’s corpse, putting her mask on and looking angrily into the mirror. It confirms she’s going to be coming after the monkey next season as the new Lady Bullseye, or some iteration thereof.
To see how Hit-Monkey and Bryce’s partnership leads to bloodshed, the first season is now streaming on Hulu.
