Tom Holland says the latest trailer for Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: No Way Home doesn’t tell the film’s whole story — not by a longshot.
Holland, who stars as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, made an appearance at the No Way Home trailer’s premiere in Los Angeles on Nov. 16, which was attended by CBR. The trailer itself pits Spidey against not only Doctor Octopus, but also fellow returning Spider-Man franchise villains Green Goblin, Sandman, Lizard and Electro. According to Holland, however, this new trailer is “just the tip of the iceberg,” with the actor promising that the film has a lot more up its sleeve.
Holland said that his favorite villain to go up against in the film was Doc Ock, played by returning Spider-Man 2 star Alfred Molina. Holland called it an “honor” to work with Molina, explaining that recent advancements in CGI gave the actor more freedom with his performance as the classic Spidey villain.
Holland also spoke highly of working with Willem Dafoe, who reprises his role as the Green Goblin from 2002’s Spider-Man. While Dafoe’s reprisal as Norman Osborn was strongly hinted at in No Way Home‘s teaser trailer and recent posters, the new, full-length trailer finally shows Gobby in all his glory. Holland explained that he was happy to finally be able to talk about Dafoe now that he’s made a proper appearance. Regarding the secrecy of Dafoe’s casting, Holland explained that all of No Way Home‘s villain actors wore cloaks so as to hide their identities from the public.
What’s more, when asked if there was a scene from his tenure as Spider-Man he would like to reshoot, Holland said there are three scenes from No Way Home — which he cannot disclose the details of — that he’d like to revisit. He clarified that said scenes are perfect as is, but that they’re just so game-changing and history-making that he’d like to give them another go.
Seeing as how No Way Home picks up after Spider-Man’s secret identity was revealed to the world in 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, Holland said that the upcoming threequel “explores the adverse effects of fame.” The actor also revealed that he wanted to hone in on Peter Parker’s youthfulness, and that “you’re going to see a style of fighting you’ve never seen in a Spider-Man film before… You’ve never seen Peter Parker quite like it.”
One of Hollywood’s worst-kept secrets over the past year has been that No Way Home will utilize the multiverse in order to bring back various characters from Spider-Man’s cinematic past. The first to be officially confirmed was Molina, who prominently appeared as Doc Ock in the film’s teaser trailer, in addition to the new full-length trailer, the latter of which also confirms the aforementioned Dafoe’s return Green Goblin in no uncertain terms.
As previously mentioned, the new trailer also features Sandman, Lizard and Electro, who previously appeared in 2007’s Spider-Man 3, 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, respectively. While the actors have not officially been named, it is expected that Thomas Haden Church and Rhys Ifans will reprise their roles as Sandman and Lizard, respectively, with the trailer also appearing to confirm Jamie Foxx’s return as Electro (though the villain himself has been redesigned).
Of course, arguably the most popular rumor that has circulated in the lead-up to No Way Home‘s release is that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are slated to reprise their roles as their respective versions of Spider-Man. While a number of photo and video leaks seem to suggest the actors are in the film, just about all parties concerned have denied the rumors. Moreover, Maguire and Garfield have not appeared in any promotional material for the film thus far, up to and including the new trailer. Another popular rumor is that Marvel Netflix star Charlie Cox is slated to reprise his role as Matt Murdock/Daredevil in No Way Home, though this too remains unconfirmed.
Spider-Man: No Way Home releases in theaters on Dec. 17.
