Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ Simu Liu has pitched himself as an Old Spice mascot — of a different variety than Isaiah Mustafa and Terry Crews.
Liu posted his Old Spice video to Twitter, giving it the synopsis, “When your deodorant holder is also your roomie, sidekick, bff AND life coach??” The ad sees a robed Liu walk out of the shower only to be spooked by his talking dragon-shaped deodorant holder, who, after a few awkward back-and-forth arguments, tries to provide some sage advice. “Look man, I’m here to make you become the best version of yourself. Do you really want to be the type of person who is scared of a talking dragon?” it argues, dismissing the actor’s excuses and demanding an answer upfront.
Eventually, Liu accepts the dragon’s critiques, who then tells him to “put on some Old Spice Dragonblast and let’s go save the world.” The scene gives way to a montage of Shang-Chi clips, coinciding with the Marvel Cinematic Universe film being added to Disney+ as part of Disney+ Day 2021.
Liu concluded his tweet with the line, “I’m on a dragon,” homaging both Shang-Chi‘s final act and the ending to Mustafa’s iconic “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” Old Spice commercial.
During its September release, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings made $8.8 million alone from Thursday previews, and by October had become the first movie to surpass $200 million in domestic profits since the COVID-19 pandemic began. While the film was a self-contained story, its mid-credit and post-credits have laid the groundwork for Shang-Chi and his family’s future roles within the MCU. These included his sister Xialing assuming leadership of the Ten Rings organization without Shang-Chi’s knowledge, and an investigation of the titular Rings’ origins that stumps Wong, Bruce Banner and Carol Danvers, who discover a beacon inside the Rings emitting a message to some unknown source of origin.
Outside of Shang-Chi, Liu’s recent work includes a number of notable voice acting roles. He played the dubbed versions of lightsaber blacksmith Lah Zhima in Star Wars: Vision‘s “The Ninth Jedi,” and protagonist Izou in Netflix’s Bright: Samurai Soul. While no release date for a Shang-Chi sequel has been announced yet, it’s been rumored that Marvel is working on a Xialing-centric Ten Rings spinoff for the Disney+ streaming platform.
