Spider-Man MCU Origin Series Has ‘Uncle Ben’ Trending as Fans Joke About His Inevitable Death

Fans are having so much fun joking about the presumed role of Uncle Ben in the upcoming Spider-Man: Freshman Year animated series that “Uncle Ben” started trending on social media.

Spider-Man, of course, has one of the most iconic origin stories of all Marvel superheroes, and central to that origin is the fact that his beloved uncle, Ben Parker, has to die from something that at least nominally could be argued was Peter Parker’s responsibility and that the death of his uncle leads Peter to devote his life to becoming a superhero under the motto (which is often something that he learned directly from Uncle Ben), “With great power comes great responsibility.” Seemingly every time there is a new Spider-Man film or series, it starts with Spidey’s origin and thus, Uncle Ben has to die each time. The Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Spider-Man was a notable exception to that trend, with Spider-Man’s origin skipped entirely. That’s going to change, though, with the announced new animated series, Spider-Man: Freshman Year, which will reportedly tell the story of how Peter Parker became Spider-Man in the MCU. However, if there’s going to be an origin, well, that’s not good news for Uncle Ben.

So fans all over social media have been having fun poking fun at how this new series will almost certainly involve Uncle Ben’s death. One of the most popular posts ties in with a popular meme involving Grand Theft Auto, as the lead character of that game, Carl “CJ” Johnson, resigns himself to the fact that things are going to get rough once more, just like Uncle Ben is about to die once more…

Another popular one shows the death sequence of Denzel Washington’s character in Training Day, noting that the MCU is about to do this to Uncle Ben again…

One fan used a Shrek clip to show Uncle Ben running when he finds out they’re doing a Spider-Man origin series…

Some fans took a moment to note that MCU head Kevin Feige had previously mentioned specifically wanting to skip over the death of Uncle Ben (note that Ben was not even mentioned in the first two MCU Spider-Man films)…

Although one fan noted that it’s been almost a decade since Amazing Spider-Man was released (and it will be a decade by the time Spider-Man: Freshman Year comes out), so Uncle Ben’s death is back to being relatively novel…

We won’t know for sure that Freshman Year will include Uncle Ben’s death, of course, but it sure seems like a likely scenario in a Spider-Man origin series. Only time will tell, though.
