Disney+’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid Announces Sequel: Rodrick Rules

Diary of Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules is next in line for an animated film adaptation at Disney+.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid, an animated film based on author/illustrator Jeff Kinney’s 2007 children’s novel of the same name, is currently slated to premiere on Disney+ on Friday, Dec. 3. As part of Disney+ Day, the House of Mouse announced that a sequel, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, is currently in the works. In a video shared to the official Disney+ Twitter account, Kinney himself confirmed that the Rodrick Rules animated movie would hit the streaming platform in 2022.

The planned 2022 animated feature will be the second film based on 2008’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, the second novel in Kinney’s Wimpy Kid saga. The book was previously adapted into a live-action film at 20th Century Fox in 2011, with actors Zachary Gordon and Devon Bostick starring in the lead roles of Greg and Rodrick Heffley, respectively.

Kinney’s original Diary of a Wimpy Kid book initially released in 2007, and the series is still going strong to this day. Its 16th and most recent mainline entry, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Big Shot, hit bookstores just a few weeks ago on Oct. 26. The Wimpy Kid series follows the adventures of Greg Heffley, and adolescent boy trying to survive the trials and tribulations of middle school.

In 2010, 20th Century Fox released Diary of a Wimpy Kid, a live-action feature film based on Kinney’s first novel. The live-action Rodrick Rules sequel released the following year. Another year later, in 2012, Fox continued the film series with Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, which shares a title with Kinney’s fourth novel, though also incorporates elements from his third book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw.

Following a five-year hiatus, Fox continued the live-action Wimpy Kid saga in 2017 with Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul. Based on Kinney’s ninth book, The Long Haul serves as a standalone sequel/soft reboot, featuring an entirely different cast from the previous three films. Two years later, in 2019, The Walt Disney Company finalized its acquisition of Fox, setting the stage for Disney+ to once again reboot Diary of a Wimpy Kid, this time from the beginning and in animated form.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid premieres Dec. 3 on Disney+. The sequel, Rodrick Rules, is slated for release in 2022.
