Nickelodeon has found its monsters for the upcoming Monster High live-action TV movie musical. The network had previously announced a two-part plan to do a live-action musical followed by a brand-new rebooted animated series, and now the cast for the movie has been set.
The lead role of the film (which is tentatively going to be titled simply Monster High), Clawdeen Wolf (a half-human/half-werewolf who finally feels accepted now that she is attending Monster High, but worries about revealing her half-human side to her new friends), will be played by Miia Harris (Just Beyond). Her new best friends at Monster High, Frankie Stein and Draculaura will be played by Ceci Balagot (Dispatches from Elsewhere) and Nayah Damasen (Grey’s Anatomy), respectively.
The other major roles will be Case Walker (The Other Two) as Deuce Gorgon, Kyle Selig (from The Mean Girls musical) as Mr. Komos, Marci T. House (Day of the Dead) as Headmistress Bloodgood, Scotch Ellis Loring (Firehouse Dog) as Apollo Wolf, Clawdeen’s dad, Steve Valentine (Mom) as Dracula, Draculaura’s dad, Jy Prishkulnik (Just Beyond) as Cleo de Nile, Lina Lecompte (Death Pursuit) as Lagoona Blue, Justin Derickson (When the Streetlights Go On) as Heath Burns, Lilah Fitzgerald (Honey Girls) as Ghoulia and Nasiv Sall (Descendants 2) as Abbey Bominable.
Filming will begin on the special this month in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and it will air at some point in 2022 on Nickelodeon (and will presumably then stream on Paramount Plus, like Nickelodeon’s other current offerings). The film will be directed by Todd Holland (The Real O’Neals, Malcolm in the Middle, Firehouse Dog), who will also serve as the executive producer of the project. The story for the movie is by Jenny Jaffe (Big Hero 6: The Series, Rugrats) & Greg Erb & Jason Oremland (Princess and the Frog, Playmobil: The Movie), while the teleplay will be by Jaffe and Billy Eddy & Matt Eddy (Zapped, Teen Beach Movie).
This film, and the aforementioned animated series follow-up, are part of a recent push by Mattel Television for new projects based on its toylines, like similar films and series starring Barbie, Masters of the Universe, Thomas & Friends, Polly Pocket and Fireman Sam.
The Monster High franchise has now been around for over a decade, so these two new media projects will be part of Mattel pushing the franchise for a new generation of viewers in 2022.
