WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Dexter: New Blood Episode 1, “Cold Snap,” which aired Sunday, November 7th on Showtime.
Dexter: New Blood showrunner and screenwriter Clyde Phillips teased in a new interview that the finale of the continuation series will “blow up the internet” when it airs.
“It’s going to be surprising, inevitable and it’s going to blow up the Internet,” Phillips told TVLine. “It is, I personally think, the best thing I’ve written.”
While Phillips didn’t share any specifics about the script, he went on to praise New Blood director Marcos Siega, who he said “…could not be more experienced and a better friend of the show.”
“[He] thinks it’s the best thing he’s ever directed,” Phillips continued. “I haven’t seen it yet, by the way. I only saw it get shot. We’re editing Episodes 7 and 8 right now, so I haven’t seen 10 yet. I can’t wait, to tell you the truth.”
Phillips’ comments about the New Blood finale come after he revealed the continuation series wouldn’t have come to fruition if the original series finale wasn’t so hated by fans. “Part of it had to do with Michael just feeling it was the right time,” Phillips said about why it took so long to get New Blood off the ground. “I flew to New York, went to see Michael, put my recorder down, and pitched him between five and 10 pages of what the season would feel like. We talked about a couple of things, and then by the end of that conversation, he said, ‘I love it. I’m in.'”
Fans may recall that the original series finale ended with Dexter driving his boat into a hurricane in an apparent suicide attempt after taking his sister Debra off life support and disposing of her body. It was soon revealed, however, that Dexter had faked his death and was now living under an assumed identity and working for a lumber company in Oregon.
The first episode of Dexter: New Blood aired on Nov. 7 and revealed that 10 years after the events of the Season 8 finale, Dexter Morgan is living a quiet life under the alias Jim Lindsay in the upstate New York small town of Iron Lake. It was also revealed in Episode 1 that the serial killer had been keeping his murderous urges in check for the last decade, but is triggered to start killing again following an altercation with an Iron Lake local named Matt.
Dexter: New Blood airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Showtime.
