Besides his ability to fly, invulnerability defines Superman. Part of the novelty that fueled Superman’s ascent to the pinnacle of pop culture relevance was in response to his inability to suffer damage. Comic fans of today may not find the concept of an invulnerable hero as enticing as their predecessors in the ’40s, but that’s because they’ve grown accustomed to the idea.
To raise narrative stakes and place the character in mortal danger, DC created a ton of weaknesses to inconvenience Superman over the years. However, aside from Kryptonite, many of Superman’s most peculiar weaknesses have been lost to time.
10 Gold Kryptonite Takes Away All Of Superman’s Abilities
When it comes to Kryptonite, fans only associate the radioactive rock with its Christmas-colored variants of green and red. Most fans don’t realize that there’s a full spectrum of colors of Kryptonite- each bearing a unique side effect for the man of tomorrow.
Whereas green Kryptonite causes Superman physical pain, the gold variant permanently strips any Kryptonian of their abilities. Although gold Kryptonite hasn’t been used too frequently in the post Crisis continuity, it’s still a potentially powerful and final deterrent to use against Superman.
9 Mind Control Can Break The Man Of Steel
One of the major misconceptions about Superman is that he’s all brawn. While the bulk of his powers are physical, Superman is no intellectual slouch. Despite all of that, the man of steel’s lack of telepathic and mental abilities makes him a prime target for cognitive compromise.
On several occasions, Superman has succumbed to villains that specialize in mental manipulation. One of the most famous examples comes from the Batman Hush storyline, where Poison Ivy uses mind-controlling spores to turn Superman into a loyal minion.
8 He Has Virtually No Defense Against Body Swap Based Attacks
Similar to mind control, but with an even more perverse application, body-swapping is an effective weakness for battling the man of steel. If one can exchange consciousness with Superman, he has virtually no defense against this kind of attack.
In Action Comics #584, a disabled villain lures Superman into a trap and swaps bodies with the big blue boy scout. After the transition, the newly able-bodied villain goes on a rampage while disguised as Superman. Superman regains control with the help of the Teen Titans.
7 Red Sun Nerfs All Of His Abilities
It’s through the process of metabolizing the unique properties of Earth’s sun that afford Superman his peerless abilities. Superman’s Kryptonian biology, evolved to process the red solar energy of his homeworld, becomes significantly enhanced by absorbing Earth’s yellow sunlight.
Exposing Superman to red solar energy- natural or synthetic- causes the powers he’s grown accustomed to disappear completely. Granted, manufacturing fake solar energy in sufficient quantities to harm Superman requires serious wealth. Unfortunately for Superman, his greatest enemy is one of the wealthiest characters in comics.
6 Superman Has An Emotional Connection To The Bottle City Of Kandor
Not every weakness is physical. Of all the characters in comics, Superman might be the most emotionally vulnerable hero by virtue of his overwhelming compassion. Existing as one of the last remnants of his homeworld, the bottled city of Kandor is one of Superman’s dearest treasures.
Housing a thriving metropolis of miniature Kryptonians, Superman goes to tremendous lengths to keep the occupants safe. If a villain were able to exploit Kandor’s importance to Superman, they could potentially force the man of steel into unfavorable positions.
5 Prolonged Eclipses Can Drain Him Of His Powers
Since he draws power from the sun, one could easily believe that Superman might become weaker at night. Superman can fight, irrespective of the time of day, because his body acts as a solar battery- storing copious sunlight in reserve.
However, depriving Superman of sunlight for several days would cause the Kryptonian to lose his superpowers slowly. An example of this scenario comes from The Final Night crossover, where the Sun-Eater extinguishes the Earth’s sun. Across several issues of the crossover, Superman steadily becomes weaker.
4 Power Absorption Can Take Him Down
Extracting Superman’s powers is a tall order for anyone, but it is possible. Among Superman’s many rogues, one of the most persistent threats is Parasite. Cursed with a bottomless hunger for bio-energy, Parasite can use his abilities to siphon the lifeforce and powers from anyone in the DC Universe– including Superman.
If a character like Parasite can produce this ability organically, replicating it through technology could easily be achieved. Giving a ruthless group like Intergang several power-absorbing weapons could easily spell the end for Superman.
3 Magic Can Overpower Him
With several cinematic entries under his belt, it’s genuinely puzzling that movie studios haven’t used a magical villain as the antagonist for any of Superman’s films. While comic fans may be slightly familiar with Superman’s aversion to the dark arts, the mainstream is utterly clueless about this weakness.
By working outside of the perimeters of observable science, magic is one of the most potent deterrents for the man of steel, as -without the aid of a magical ally- Superman has little recourse against mystical attacks.
2 Reality Warping Can Distort His Physiology
Reality warping abilities are like magic on steroids when combatting Superman. While Superman is impossibly powerful, he is still bound to the, albeit loose, laws of physics that bind the DC Universe. When Superman encounters a character that can augment reality at their will, Superman and his abilities become as malleable as the reality his foe is distorting.
Whereas magical attacks cause physical harm to Superman, reality-bending opponents can consistently shift the battle in their favor by distorting the man of steel’s physiology or environment.
1 Superman Is Very Protective Of Jimmy Olsen
Like magic, fans that don’t read comics puzzle to understand the utility of Jimmy Olsen. In modernity, fans wrongly regard Jimmy as a vestigial limb among Superman’s supporting cast. Possessing a sonic signal watch that can summon Superman on command, a kidnapped Jimmy could be the key to toppling the man of tomorrow.
Aside from the practical aspect of the signal watch, Superman- who views Jimmy as his little brother- is only slightly less protective of the photographer than he is of Lois Lane.
