Less than two weeks after its premiere on Paramount+, the Nickelodeon-produced animated series Star Trek: Prodigy has received an early Season 2 pickup.
In a press release shared today, Nov. 8, Paramount+ promised that “[m]ore adventures await the motley crew of the U.S.S. Protostar,” as the ViacomCBS-owned streaming platform has officially renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for a second season. Paramount+ explains that Prodigy “is already a hit amongst Paramount+ subscribers, and had the top-performing premiere day out of any original animated kids series on the service.”
Prodigy debuted on Paramount+ with an hour-long premiere episode on Thursday, Oct. 28. The kid-friendly Star Trek animated series’ first season has been split into two 10-episode halves. The first five episodes of Season 1’s first half will continue to hit Paramount+ on a weekly basis through Thursday, Nov. 18 before the show goes on break.
The remaining five episodes of Season 1’s first half will then begin streaming on Paramount+ weekly starting Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022. Season 1’s 10-episode second half will also arrive in 2022, though a specific premiere date for that batch of episodes has not been announced. It also remains to be seen when exactly Season 2 will hit the platform.
Developed by Kevin and Dan Hageman (Trollhunters, Ninjago), Prodigy is a CG-animated series that serves as “the first Star Trek series aimed at younger audiences.” It “follows a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search of a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered… but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.”
The series’ voice cast includes Brett Gray as Dal, Ella Purnell as Gwyn, Jason Mantzoukas as Jankom Pog, Angus Imrie as Zero, Rylee Alazraqui as Rok-Tahk, Dee Bradley Baker as Murf, Jimmi Simpson as Drednok, John Noble as the Diviner and Bonnie Gordon as the U.S.S. Protostar’s computer. Additionally, Prodigy stars the voice of Kate Mulgrew as a hologram version of Starfleet Captain Kathryn Janeway. Mulgrew originally portrayed Capt. Janeway on the live-action television series Star Trek: Voyager, which ran for seven seasons on UPN from 1995 to 2001.
Prodigy is produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio and CBS Eye Animation Productions. It was originally supposed to premiere on Nickelodeon itself, with the then-untitled series initially receiving a two-season order at the children’s television network back in 2019. Plans changed this past February, when it was announced that Prodigy would instead be premiering on the Paramount+ streaming service before airing on Nick at a later time.
New episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy stream Thursdays on Paramount+.
