Fans of Star Wars: The Old Republic have plenty left to look forward to as BioWare has no intention of ending the MMO game anytime soon.
PC Gamer spoke to the game’s creative director, Charles Boyd, who revealed more about the developer’s plans for the game as the 10-year anniversary draws near. When asked whether the game would be drawing to an end in the near future, perhaps so BioWare could work on other projects, Boyd simply said there are “no plans to stop anytime soon.” However, even though the game will press on, a few changes will affect things going forward.
The first matter revolves around the MMO’s most recent story arc, set to be resolved in the next expansion. The upcoming eighth expansion to the game, Legacy of the Sith, will center its narrative around the character of Darth Malgus, freshly raised from the dead to wreak havoc once more. Boyd suggested Malgus’s role could be to bring closure to the story thus far.
“Malgus has been around since the start. He’s probably our most recognizable villain,” Boyd said. “He was first introduced in those CG trailers before the game even launched. So with it now coming around to 10 years, coming around kind of full circle, maybe that could happen, maybe some kind of closure for Malgus — whatever that might mean. That could be a reasonable guess.”
As the MMO’s story progresses, it’s had to become slightly more narrow and focused to keep things orderly. This contrasts heavily with the game’s first installment, which saw each player explore unique stories tailored to their chosen class. Boyd said BioWare had no plans to return to this style, claiming it was simply unfeasible. “I think it’s unlikely that we would ever go in a direction where now it’s eight completely separate storylines for several years,” he stated. “That’s just so many different things to keep track of, and to produce. It’s literally eight times the work, right? Not quite eight times the voiceover, but it is a lot. But that said, we’re always looking for chances to call out your class versus someone else’s, or your background versus someone else’s, in any of the stories we do.”
The story of the Old Republic is not only being told through BioWare’s MMO. The original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is so to receive a remake in the future, although it will be helmed by Aspyr Media. As for the original game, it’s also set to receive a new Nintendo Switch port on Nov. 11.
