WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Hypnotic, now streaming on Netflix.
As Netflix’s Hypnotic rolls on, Jenn’s (Kate Siegel) journey as a woman struck by grief following a stillbirth goes from tragic and relatable to head-scratching. It’s all due to her visiting a psychiatrist, Dr. Collin Meade (Jason O’Mara), who uses hypnosis to mind-control as part of some twisted game. However, as he does so, some of his methods don’t add up, creating quite a few plot holes and unanswered questions.
Why Does Gina Answer Meade’s Call in Netflix’s Hypnotic?
Gina’s the person who put Jenn onto Meade, but they both realize he’s been tampering with their minds. More so, he’s got a trail of dead women in his past, so they’re actively investigating him as they can tell he’s manipulating both via hypnosis. Yet later on, Gina answers a call from Meade and proceeds to talk to him, rather than hang up after Jenn told her never to speak to the doctor again. It’s a dumb moment as Meade triggers her to shut down and causes her to crash and die.
Why Doesn’t Meade Use Jenn As A Killer?
Meade uses another patient to turn her into a slasher with his mind-control, having the lady attempt to kill Detective Rollins midway through the film. Rollins kills the attacker but ends up in the hospital recovering. Now, Meade knows he’s vulnerable there and that Jenn’s visiting the cop, so he could have had her secretly kill Rollins, especially as both are conspiring to expose his nefarious methods. The fact that he spoke to Jenn before she visited the hospital yet let her work with Rollins is laughable.
Why Do The Cops in Hypnotic Ignore Meade?
Early on, Rollins admits the department isn’t interested in Meade as they find the accusations ridiculous. Yet he’s got multiple women he worked with, who all have the same M.O. of dying alone or via mysterious circumstances across America, which can simply be googled. Rollins, Gina and Jenn are all people who tried to expose him and who have been subjected to violence so that’s more evidence. Lastly, the cops themselves use hypnotists to activate witnesses’ repressed memories, so they shouldn’t be dismissive of Meade’s practice.
Why Does Meade Stay At His Dad’s Lair?
In the finale, Meade lures Jenn to his dad’s lair as his father, Xavier Sullivan, taught him mind tricks there years ago. But it makes no sense to remain at that place as Meade knows Rollins and Jenn have found out his true identity and the address. As he incapacitates Jenn, he should be fleeing so he can finish reprogramming her with the memories of his dead wife, Amy. It’s weird that he stays at the home to plan a romantic night out, while knowing Rollins or the cavalry are en route.
Why Not Send The Cavalry Earlier?
Rollins has to leave the hospital to rescue Jenn after she calls him, but knowing Meade’s powers, it’s strange that she didn’t wait and bring the rest of the cops with her. She knows Meade’s setting a trap for her, so it’d make sense to have backup he can’t control. Also, Rollins sends a team to Meade’s workplace, yet he has the identity of Xavier Sullivan (Meade’s dad) from Jenn that could have allowed him to send a team to the dad’s house. This is totally ignored so he alone could go try to rescue Jenn, when he has cops already mobile and frantically searching.
How Does Jenn’s Premonition Show Xavier and the Home in Hypnotic?
The most ridiculous moment in Hypnotic comes when Jenn’s memories show her Xavier’s home and the old man himself. The problem is, Meade mentioned his dad, but he never showed him to Jenn. Plus, he only planted memories about Amy and the inside of the house, not the exterior. Jenn has to google search to find the address and what the home looks like, so there’s no way her visions before could have showed her how the place looked on the outside.
