In My Hero Academia, Quirks can be passed down from parents to children just like eye colors. This manifests in various ways, like Todoroki’s Hot & Cold Quirk being the perfect synthesis of his parents’ Quirks, some children manifesting Quirks unrelated to their parents’ Quirks, or even no Quirk at all.
Children will occasionally manifest multiple Quirks where one is just a mutation and not related to what fans consider their “main” power. Sometimes, these mutations are so complementary to the main Quirk that fans forget that there is any difference at all. One example is Hawks’ mutation Quirk being his wings, while his main Quirk is telepathically controlling the feathers of those wings.
10 Kaoruko Awata’s Quirk Has Nothing To Do With Her Blue Skin
Kaoroku Awata, or Bubble Girl, was one of Sir Knighteye’s sidekicks before Centipeder took Knighteye’s place. Her Quirk lets her create bubbles from her exposed skin that have any odor she has smelled before. She can make the bubbles smell pleasant, horrid, or anywhere in between, and has been seen using this ability during close-quarters combat to surprise her opponent and even have her foul-smelling bubbles explode in the opponent’s eyes.
The part of her Bubble Quirk that is unrelated to using bubbles would be her blue skin mutation. One parent may have had a water-related Quirk that gave them blue skin, and another might have had an aroma Quirk, leading to Kaoruko’s strange bubble Quirk.
9 Manga Fukidashi’s Head Is Thematic But Doesn’t Help Him Fight
Manga Fukidashi has one of the most creative and fun designs in My Hero Academia but being in Class 1-B caused him to not be as fleshed out as many other recurring characters. Fans do know that Manga’s Quirk lets him materialize physical words by speaking them, and these words take the characteristics of the word spoken. An example would be Manga speaking the word “Loud” and having the physical word appear while emitting as much noise as possible.
Manga’s head is obviously not a human head but a text bubble. Even though Manga’s mutation and his word creation Quirks are both comic-related, they were not necessarily given to Manga by the same parent. Manga’s head gives him a unique design but does not really affect his main Quirk in any meaningful way.
8 Mina Ashido’s Otherworldly Appearance Does Not Affect Her Acid Quirk
Mina Ashido is one of the most responsible and driven characters in My Hero Academia. She can secrete acid from her skin, she can control the acidity and viscosity of that acid, and she sometimes uses an ability called Acidman that covers her entirely in a layer of thick acidic liquid.
Despite Mina’s range of abilities, none of them actually have anything to do with the fact that she has pink skin, pink hair, black sclera, and tiny horns. Mina’s power and resourcefulness have impressed fans time and time again, but the only thing her physical mutation does for her is make her look like an alien.
7 Cementoss’ Stone Body Suits Him But Is Not Essential
Cementoss looks like a huge slab of stone, but his sturdy body doesn’t make his Cement Quirk any more or less powerful. At the very least, Cementoss can probably take a hit better than most humans and that is always valuable when facing off against the League of Villains or even helping people out of a burning building.
One of his parents may have had a stone body Quirk while the other parent could manipulate stone, but like many other characters in My Hero Academia, Cementoss’ parents have never been shown.
6 Habuko Mongoose’s Quirk Might Be Misleading
Habuko is a student at Isamu Academy High School and her Quirk gives her the ability to paralyze her target for a short time by looking them in the eyes. Habuko also has the head and neck of a habu snake, which is a native species of snake in Japan.
Her Quirk is clearly based on Gorgons, the Greek mythological creature. Gorgons have snakes for hair and permanently paralyze their attackers by eye contact, so Habuko’s Quirk is an accurate, yet slightly altered, reference. Even though Habuko’s Quirk gives her the powers and appearance of a Gorgon, her Quirk could just be the culmination of one parent’s snake Quirk mixing with another parent’s paralysis Quirk to create the perfect Medusa Quirk.
5 Pony Tsunotori Is Not A Horse But Is A Telepath
Pony is a strange case. Her horns are the most notable aspect of her Quirk, which can be shot off from her head and controlled telepathically. Oddly enough, everything else from her name to her costume seems to be based on horses, which obviously don’t have horns like bovine animals do. She even wears a bridle and stirrups as part of her hero costume. Maybe she just likes horses more than goats?
Even though her costume is based on horses and her horns are closer to that of a sheep or gazelle, it doesn’t change the fact that her telekinesis powers and animal-like appearance could come from separate sides of the family. This also goes for Hawks, who has strikingly similar powers except for controlling his feathers instead of horns.
4 Koji Koda’s Rock-Like Body Might Make Him Less Threatening To Animals
Koda is a character who often stays out of the spotlight during most events in My Hero Academia, but his power is impressive nonetheless. His Quirk, Anivoice, allows him to speak to animals and give them simple commands.
With a power like talking to animals, the look of Koda’s body isn’t especially important, but it is possible that Koda’s non-threatening and rock-like appearance gives animals a sense of ease when around him. It is unknown if Koda inherited his Anivoice Quirk from his father, but Koda’s mother has been shown to have the same rocky mutation as Koda.
3 Shihai Kuroiro’s Skin Lets Him Make The Most Of His Quirk
Kuroiro is a member of Class 1-B and a friendly rival of Tokoyami, and the two have bonded over their love of all things dark and mysterious as well as their darkness-themed Quirks. Kuroiro has jet black skin and a Quirk that lets him sink into black items or shadows.
It is possible that Kuroiro’s skin mutation has made his ability to meld into black places even stronger than it would be if he had a lighter skin color. One parent may have had jet black skin, while the other’s Quirk may have involved shadows, but their combined Quirk in the form of Kuroiro is incredibly powerful.
2 Nagamasa Mora’s Hairy Body Is A Boon For His Quirk
Nagamasa Mora is a student at Shiketsu High School who has thick fur covering his entire body. This fur can be extended and controlled at will. The Extend-o-Hair Quirk was displayed at the Provisional Hero License Exams and was deceptively powerful, especially at ensnaring Mora’s opponents.
Like others on this list, Nagamasa Mora’s Quirk may be the synthesis of two parental Quirks becoming stronger when combined, such as a one parent’s furry body Quirk combining with the other parent’s hair control Quirk.
1 Fumikage Tokoyami’s Bird Attributes Only Make Dark Shadow Better
Tokoyami’s Quirk is Dark Shadow, which lets him command a sentient shadow. The Dark Shadow can also envelop Tokoyami like Marvel‘s Venom, giving Tokoyami incredible strength and ferocity. Tokoyami has even used Dark Shadow to create broad wings that allow him to soar through the sky almost like his mentor, Hawks.
Tokoyami’s mutation permanently gave him the head of an ominous crow or raven-like bird, which may have been passed down from a different parent than the Dark Shadow was. It has never been stated in the story, but Tokoyami might also have the hollow skull and/or bones of a flighted bird, which would make his ability to soar with Dark Shadow even more effective.
