The ongoing manga was first published on Shueisha’s Shōnen Jump+ app and website on March 25, 2019, and so far, it has produced seven volumes worth of content. Spy x Family quickly became a fan favorite, and as of June, over 11 million copies of the series have been sold. It has also experienced critical success: In 2020, the manga was nominated for the 44th Kodansha Manga Award and the 24th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. In 2021, Spy x Family was nominated for the Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia and the Harvey Award for Best Manga.
The story follows Loid Forger, a spy who has extraordinary skills in combat, memory recall and information processing. When his latest mission requires him to create a fake family, he unknowingly adopts a young girl who can read other people’s minds and marries a professional assassin, nicknamed ‘Thorn Princess.”
Wit Studio (The Ancient Magus’ Bride, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress) is collaborating with CloverWorks to produce Spy x Family. Kazuhiro Furuhashi (Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, Altair: A Record of Battles) is directing the show with Kazuaki Shimada (Fate/Grand Order – Absolute Demonic Front Babylonia, You’re Being Summoned, Azazel) handing the character designs and [K]NoW_NAME (Grimgar, Ashes and Illusions, Fairy Gone) producing the music. Veteran voice actor Takuya Eguchi (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime) is voicing Loid.
Spy x Family isn’t the only project CloverWorks has in the works for next year. The studio is also producing an original anime series, Tokyo 24th Ward (known in Japan as Tokyo 24-ku), which follows three friends as they endeavor to protect the residents of the titular floating island. The series stars Junya Enoki (Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, Komi Can’t Communicate), Kaito Ishikawa (The Rising of the Shield Hero, The Case Study of Vanitas) and Yuma Uchida (Jujutsu Kaisen, Orient).
While the anime has been scheduled for a 2022 release, it is currently unknown what channel in Japan Spy x Family will debut on or if the series will receive an international release.
