Netflix Offers a Gruesome Halloween Movie Tip | CBR

Halloween is here again; the spooky occasion on which audiences are most likely searching for films to send a shiver down their spine. Thankfully, streaming giant Netflix has a gruesome just for them.

On social media, Netflix recommended the recently released Fear Street: Part One – 1994, along with a special tip. “If you start Fear Street 1994 at 10:34:43 pm, the bread slicer kill will play at exactly midnight. Start your Halloween off right.”

One of the most violent and memorable kills in Fear Street 1994 took place in the baked goods section of a grocery store. Kate, hides from the reanimated serial killer behind a counter, but her efforts prove to be futile. The Shadyside Mall killer finds her and stabs her in the stomach with a knife. She attempts to get free from his grip, but he throws her on a cutting board and slides her head through a bread slicer. The scene featured a graphic closeup on the resulting damage.

In an interview with IndieWire, director Leigh Janiak explained how getting that death scene to film was a struggle and that she had to argue with the art department about how it should be depicted. “they were like, ‘A head wouldn’t do that,’ and I was like, ‘I don’t care. We’re making a movie. This is fun. Whatever!’ Then they bought a bread slicer and we put watermelons through it, and the first watermelon that went through just got sliced perfectly.”

The teen slasher film is based on the book series of the same name by Goosebumps author R. L. Stine and is the first in Fear Street trilogy that was released in July. Aside from 1994, the trilogy consists of Fear Street Part Two: 1978 and Fear Street Part Three: 1666. Both continue the story through physical and narrative time jumps. The trilogy has received generally positive reviews from critics and audiences. They were released into theaters for a short time before being made available for streaming on Netflix.

For comparison, Fear Street: Part One – 1994 has a critic score of 83 percent on review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes, and an audience score of 63 percent. Fear Street Part Two: 1978 was received slightly better, with a critic score of 88 percent and an audience score of 81 percent. Finally, Fear Street Part Three: 1666 closed off the trilogy on a high note, with a critic score of 90 percent and an audience score of 77 percent. CBR’s own Sandy Schaeffer gave 1994 a positive review, writing, “Fear Street: Part 1 – 1994 is such an unabashedly affectionate ode to R.L. Stine’s shlocky horror novels that it’s easy to overlook its flaws.”
