This year, the World of Darkness invites game developers and fans from around the world to create their own interactive experience using the Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition setting.
White Wolf Publishing announced that the first official Vampire Jam will allow developers one month to build a video game set in the universe of Vampire: The Masquerade. During the event, the publisher will open the Dark Pack Agreement, the set of rules designed to protect the exclusivity of the World of Darkness game development rights. Creators will then be able to use the setting, storylines and game systems at their leisure to build and potentially publish their very own Vampire: The Masquerade title. Vampire Jam will kick off this Halloween, Oct. 31, and will conclude on Nov. 30.
When the development period of Vampire Jam comes to an end, contestants can submit their projects to the World of Darkness team who will vote to select its favorite entries. The winners will each receive a bounty of prizes. Chosen designers will have a chance to collaborate with the World of Darkness brand team and release their game on Steam, making them official members of the franchise. Winners will also be awarded up to $1,000 USD and a digital collection of Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition books.
White Wolf Publishing hasn’t outlined many restrictions for the games created for Vampire Jam regarding genre, content or mechanics. The team only stipulates that projects submitted for consideration must use the Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition setting and that work on the games may begin no earlier than Oct. 31.
To help guide developers through Vampire Jam, the World of Darkness team will host a workshop titled “How To Make Your Own Vampire Game.” The course will stream Saturday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. CEST/9 a.m. Pacific on the World of Darkness Twitch channel.
First conceived in 1991, Vampire: The Masquerade places players in a gothic version of the modern world in which vampires walk hidden among human society, waging secret wars against hunters and rival factions. The game’s 5th edition was released in 2018 and continues to grow in popularity.
The beloved vampire TTPRG has spawned a series of video games that take place in the World of Darkness. Notable games include the critically-acclaimed Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, developed by Troika Games and released in 2004. A long-awaited sequel to Bloodlines was in development but was delayed indefinitely after developer Hardsuit Labs exited the project in early 2021.
Other upcoming Vampire: The Masquerade video games include a multiplayer battle royale experience from Sharkmob titled Vampire: The Masquerade – Blood Hunt, which is currently available in early access on Steam. Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong, an action RPG from developer Big Bad Wolf, is scheduled to release in February of 2022.
