Resident Evil Reboot Featurette Highlights Chris Redfield | CBR

A new featurette from Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City introduces viewers to one of the movie’s heroes, police officer Chris Redfield, played by Robbie Amell.

In the video, writer/director Johannes Roberts describes Chris as “a small-town hero” and a new member of Raccoon City’s Special Tactics and Rescue Service (or S.T.A.R.S.). However, when the Umbrella Corporation creates a deadly zombie virus that threatens the entire world, Chris “has to become more just a small-town hero, he has to become this action hero.”

Amell also discusses Welcome to Raccoon City‘s fidelity to the classic Resident Evil games. “What’s really cool about our movie,” he explains. “Is that it is very much an adaptation of the games. It’s like I’m living in a video game and it’s really, really exciting. Every frame has details to the game,” he said. “This is a horror movie created with love of the game.” Roberts has previously talked up his intention to match the original Resident Evils as much as possible.

Resident Evil was originally adapted for the big screen in 2002, launching an action film franchise that spanned six movies and 14 years, all of them directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. Welcome to Raccoon City will act as a reboot of the franchise, with Roberts stating his goal is to get back to the series’s terrifying roots. “I wanted to go back to the horror of it all. I wanted scares and atmosphere rather than full-on action. I think fans of the game felt the same,” he said. “They wanted to see the iconic characters and locations and feel that the movie was more in line with the Resident Evil game world so that’s really why we chose to go in that direction.”

“We worked hand in hand with Capcom on this movie to the point that we actually got blueprints from them on the designs of the Spencer Mansion and Raccoon police station in order to recreate them as perfectly as we could,” he continued. “We even have the exact artwork up on the mansion walls. Capcom saw it for the first time the other day and was so happy and excited.”

Alongside Amell, Welcome to Raccoon City also features Kaya Scodelario as Chris’s sister Claire, Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine, Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia as Leon S. Kennedy, Donal Logue as Chief Brian Irons and Neal McDonough as William Birkin. The film releases exclusively in theaters on Nov. 24.
