Squid Game: Ranking Each Main Player Based On How They’d Fare In The Final Contest

South Korea’s hit series Squid Game has become a sensation in the short time since its release. The breathtaking nature of the contests left audiences stunned upon viewing the nine episodes. Debates about how things may have turned out for the competitors if they’d made different choices have raged ever since.

It’s fun to imagine alternative fates for every one of Squid Game’s captivating characters. Though fans never got to see the majority of the deadly game show’s contestants make it to the ultimate challenge of the Squid Game itself, it’s possible to look at those players who came close, and wonder how they might have fared had they stepped onto the final cephalopod-shaped board.

8 Squid Game Is No Place For An Old Man, & Oh Il-nam Is Fully Aware Of This Fact

oh il-nam from squid game

Unless Squid Game’s oldest player utilized some seriously villainous trickery, which of course can already be found etched into 001’s playbook, it’s near impossible to see him getting a win in the game’s last trial.

Oh Il-nam is elderly, frail, and lacks any sort of speed or explosiveness. If you had to choose one player to face off against in this fatal fixture, it would be number 001. Squid Game may be unpredictable, and he may have provided viewers with what is arguably its biggest shock, yet Il-nam has no chance at beating any of the other players in the final round.

7 Ji-yeong Lacks The Strength & Size To Really Pose A Threat

Sadly, the women are at a major disadvantage when it comes to South Korea’s most deadly final contest, this children’s game favors those with strength and size advantages, and though smarts are a necessity, they will arguably only get you so far.

Ji-yeong is simply too small and seemingly too good-natured to pose much of a threat to any of the game’s major players. The apparent ease in which she sacrificed herself so Sae-byeok could progress also displays her lack of ruthlessness. Player 240 never really seemed all that fussed about winning the high-stakes tournament, she simply had nowhere else left to go after such a traumatic upbringing.

6 Ali Has The Strength & The Heart Of A Lion, But His Heart Would Be His Downfall

Ali Abdul before his death in Squid Game

Ali Abdul not only has the biggest heart of all the main contestants, but he is also the strongest. Possessing exceptional strength for size makes the Pakistani ex-pat a fierce foe for a Squid Game showdown, yet his undoing would ultimately be his complete lack of a killer instinct.

This is the man that saved Gi-hun’s life when he was just a stranger, so it’s hard to imagine that if Ali had made it to the concluding battle, he would have what it takes to take his opponent down, especially if he considered them his friend. It’s difficult to picture player 199 harming anyone. He may be the show’s most lovable character, yet Ali was never going to win Squid Game.

5 Mi-nyeo Could Manipulate Her Way Into Having A Chance In The Final Squid Game

Han Mi-nyeo is one mean, manipulative woman, and her penchant for deception makes her an awkward adversary when life is on the line. She’s certainly not afraid to lie and cheat her way to victory, and it wouldn’t be out of character to attempt to resort to sexual persuasions to gain an advantage.

This may only put the likes of Deok-su in a spot of trouble, though it’s worth noting just how cold-hearted Mi-nyeo appears at times, and this flaw-turned-feature would give her the edge against the more honorable players.

4 Her Days As A Pickpocket Give Sae-byeok Some Serious Squid Game Skills

Another of Squid Game’s tragic cases, the North Korean defector has a decent repertoire of skills for the contest’s ending. She’s speedy, highly intelligent, and judging from her days as a pickpocket, she’s remarkably resourceful, cunning, and crafty.

What she lacks in size she makes up for in heart, Sae-byeok would not be easy to defeat, this is a girl that somehow managed to sit upright at a dining table whilst bleeding out from her abdomen. She’s perhaps Squid Game’s toughest competitor, though even with that said, player 067 may just lack the merciless nature needed to send her opponent to their death without hesitation, and that could cost her big time.

3 Sang-woo Has All The Brains, Some Brawn, & An Unrelenting Desire To Win

The smartest man in the room proved a most difficult opponent for Gi-hun in Squid Game’s closing contest, his unmatched intellect combined with the ability to disregard his morals makes Cho Sang-woo an incredibly dangerous opponent.

Player 218 also has some considerable size and strength on his side that would allow him to make easy work of smaller opponents. If someone were to get the upper hand against him though, you can bet your bottom won that this hometown hero would concoct a plan to snatch the victory.

2 Deok-su Is Squid Game’s Most Physically Imposing Player

This raging ruffian is a frontrunner when it comes to the final game favorites. He has the size and strength to outmuscle most opponents, and any lucky enough to be stronger than player 101 would likely be bested by the gangster’s ruthless, brutal, and unflinching willingness to commit murder.

If an opportunity to win presented itself, Jang Deok-su would not hesitate for a second to seize it, though in the final showdown there’d be far less chance of him being able to sacrifice other players for his own gain.

1 Gi-hun Is The Master Of The Squid Game, & There’s No One Who Could Take His Crown

Squid Game - One Lucky Day

He’s not the strongest, smartest, or even the quickest, yet Gi-hun’s combination of these traits, along with his honorable nature and a little dash of luck, of course, are the reasons he made it to the end of Squid Game and took home that piggy bank full of cash.

He played this game as a child, and it’s clear from his interactions with his daughter as well as his relationship with his mom that player 456 isn’t exactly the most mature competitor in the game of death. This only serves to help him in surviving the horrors that lurk inside the brightly colored walls of Squid Game.
