A new promotional clip for Marvel Studios’ upcoming Eternals shows why the newly surfaced team of heroes is facing off against their millennia-old foes the Deviants now — after half the galaxy was wiped out by Thanos before being restored by The Avengers.
“The Deviants — they’ve evolved,” says Sersi, played by Gemma Khan. The clip leads with a brief glimpse of the especially sinister monsters, before she and the team take on one of the monstrous creatures.
“Eternals assemble,” rallies Ikaris, played by Richard Madden, as the team prepares to battle the monster. The phrase evokes the classic Avengers battle cry, first uttered by Captain America in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. “That’s a pretty good line,” responds fellow Eternal Kingo, played by Kumail Nanjiani.
Why or how the Deviants have evolved — or any definitive idea on what the creatures might have looked like before The Blip — remains unknown.
The Eternals are a powerful race of beings sent to Earth thousands of years ago by the god-like Celestials to protect humanity from the threat of The Deviants. The otherworlders had remained in the shadows at the behest of their dispatchers, awaiting any new potential threat from the Deviants to resurface before again stepping forward.
Thanos’ genocidal finger-snap in Avengers: Infinity War — and the Hulk/Bruce Banner’s subsequent snap that restored the exterminated half of the population in Endgame — have collectively come to be called The Blip in Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity. In the Eternals official trailer, The Blip is said to have “provided the necessary energy for the emergence to begin.” Whether this “emergence” is referring to the return of the Deviants, or something else entirely, is another mystery to be addressed in the film.
Eternals arrives in theaters Nov. 5.
