WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Gamma Flight #5, available now from Marvel.
The irradiated heroes of Gamma Flight have seen some horrifying sights, but the army of Gamma Zombies that they have only recently discovered is easily the most unsettling so far. Without realizing it, almost an entire town was transformed into the Abomination‘s personal army of radioactive monstrosities. Luckily, the heroes have managed to work out a solution to the impending threat. Unfortunately, saving the public from their own gruesome fates has also left their enemy with no reason not to strike now.
When the heroes realized how deep Abomination’s machinations ran, they immediately sought out a solution to the problem of his irradiated army. Luckily enough, the Cathexis Ray technology the villain was using to empower his forces just so happened to be an invention of Doc Samson’s, giving Gamma Flight the perfect avenue through which to strike back. Getting to the device was easy enough with Del Frye’s sixth Gamma sense leading the way through the zombie hordes, though that wouldn’t keep the heroes from being spotted by security cameras or falling victim to super science. While adjusting the device, a slight miscalculation leads to Doc, Absorbing Man and Doctor McGowan being completely engulfed in a massive eruption of energy. Once the dust has settled Carl Creel is left literally pulling himself back together. Of course, the Absorbing Man has shown time and time before that he is more than capable of taking on whatever form he needs, including a living piece of super technology, and with that their plan is back on.
Carl Creel is more than ready to unleash whatever power it is he has amassed on his enemies, but Doctor McGowan tells him that they have already accomplished what they set out to do. Despite the machine having nearly killed them all, they were still able to send out the correct frequency to purge the locals of their Gamma implants. These minuscule versions of the same grafts that brought back Abomination and Skaar had been leeched into the residents of Thomasville, Texas by way of the supplement Fortify. While none of those who had taken the supplement had any reason to complain previously, once they all begin vomiting up the writhing, insect-like implants it becomes clear that not everything is as it seems. Those affected still don’t know exactly what happened to them, but there is no doubt that they will all learn soon enough — especially now that Gamma Flight has forced Abomination’s hand in the pages of Gamma Flight #5 by Al Ewing, Crystal Frasier, Lan Medina, Antonio Fabela and VC’s Joe Sabino.
General Fortean/Abomination had long been biding his time and building his army through Green Spring, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Now that he has been stripped of much of his forces and his enemies are at his doorstep, there is no reason for him to hold back. He might not have his Gamma Zombies anymore, but Abomination still has a legion of radioactive henchmen at his disposal on top of the weapons and resources within the facility. The heroes may have saved the citizens of Thomasville from turning into monsters, but they are far from saving the town itself so long as Abomination is still standing.
