Netflix’s The Sandman Reveals First Look at Gwendoline Christie’s Lucifer

At DC FanDome, Netflix revealed a first look at Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer Morningstar in its upcoming adaptation of The Sandman.

The first of the two images shows a straight-on shot of Christie as Lucifer, while the second focuses on her wings. “Never play games with Lucifer,” the text on both images warns.

Christie is best known for her roles as Brienne of Tarth in HBO’s Game of Thrones and as Captain Phasma in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. In 2019, Christie was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series as a result of her work on Game of Thrones. Her casting as Lucifer in The Sandman was officially announced this past January.

Created by Neil Gaiman and Sam Kieth, Lucifer first appeared in 1989’s Sandman #4. Based on the Biblical figure of the same name, Lucifer — also known as Samael — is a fallen angel and the ruler of Hell. However, Lucifer eventually leaves Hell and goes to Earth, where he opens up a piano bar called Lux. Later, Lucifer received a spin-off comic series.

Outside of the comics, Lucifer first appeared in the 2005 live-action Constantine film. Later, Tom Ellis played the character on Fox’s Lucifer, which premiered in 2016. However, neither of those versions were particularly faithful to the source material. Christie’s Lucifer, though, is expected to be the most comics-accurate depiction of the fallen angel yet.

Running from 1989 until 1996, The Sandman was written by Gaiman. The series featured work from a number of different artists, including Kieth, Mike Dringenberg and more. Although the series is often ranked among the best ever in the history of comics, it’s taken decades for a live-action adaptation to get off the ground. However, in 2019, Netflix made a deal with Warner Bros., which resulted in the upcoming series.

Currently, Netflix’s The Sandman is expected to be quite accurate to the comics, though with some key changes related to usable characters and timeline. The series follows Morpheus/Dream, one of seven powerful beings called the Endless, after he gets free from over a century of imprisonment.

Netflix has not yet revealed when The Sandman will premiere. Tom Sturridge, Vivienne Acheampong, Boyd Holbrook, Charles Dance star in the series alongside Christie.
