WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Titans Season 3, Episode 12, “Prodigal,” available now on HBO Max.
At the end of last week’s episode of Titans, Dick Grayson/Nightwing was indeed killed in his battle against Jason Todd/Red Hood. As is often the case in comics, though, Dick doesn’t stay dead for long. And in the process of coming back to life via Lazarus Pit, Titans seemingly revealed Dick’s future daughter with Koriand’r/Starfire.
After Gar Logan and Rachel Roth/Raven bring Dick to a Lazarus Pit hidden in Gotham City, Nightwing starts a wild, surreal journey through his subconscious. He’s forced to contend with his own feelings of inadequacy and the death of his parents. Eventually, this leads him to a vision of his father, who forgives Dick for whatever mistakes he’s made and affirms his love for his son. Then, Dick sees a girl holding a red balloon and walks towards her. She hands him the balloon and says, “Hi, Daddy.”
Played by Lillian Monize, the child is just credited as “Dick’s Little Girl.” As such, it’s not entirely clear if she’s intended to be somebody or if she’s solely part of Dick’s surreal journey in the Lazarus Pit. There are a few options for just who the character might be meant to represent, but the best option is probably Mar’i Grayson/Nightstar.
Created by Mark Waid and Alex Ross, Mar’i first appeared in 1996’s Kingdom Come #1. She’s the daughter of Starfire and Nightwing, making her a human/Tamaranean hybrid capable of manipulating energy. When Mar’i was young, Starfire died, and the young Grayson’s relationship with Nightwing eventually became strained. Still, she served as a key hero during the events of that series.
Overall, there’s not a lot of proof it is Mar’i, but there’s on detail that’s important. In Titans, Dick’s daughter is Black. As Starfire is Black on the show and she’s had a long romantic history with Dick in the comics, it’s not exactly a difficult leap to say that the little girl is their daughter, especially since they had a daughter in the comics.
Regardless of if this ends up being Mar’i, Titans may have just dropped a massive hint that Starfire and Dick’s relationship will progress. While Dick has recently started up a relationship with Barbara Gordon again, he and Starfire do have an intimate history, and there’s a good chance that’s not going to remain in the past. So going forward, Mar’i may very well become part of the Titans equation.
The first 12 episodes of Titans Season 3 are available now on HBO Max. Episode 13 releases Oct. 21.
