10 Disorganized Anime Characters Who Love Making A Mess | CBR

Some anime characters embrace their messy lifestyle. Oftentimes, messy or disorganized characters are more memorable or more endearing for those simple traits, and their energy or lack of focus might make fans smile rather than scream in frustration at the disorder.

Sometimes these characters make messes themselves because they’re so full of energy and create chaos wherever they go. Others can simply tolerate an accumulating mess, as they are too lazy or too distracted to clean up. Some of the messes are just clutter, while others are more destructive. Regardless, these lovable mess makers have left their mark in the anime world.

10 Umaru-Chan Is The Queen Of Lazy (Himouto! Umaru-chan)

The notorious Umaru-chan from Himouto! Umaru-chan loves her snacks and off-brand colas. When in public, Umaru is a lively and attractive high school student whom her fellow female students look up to. She will maintain that image as long as she’s outside the confines of her home. When she returns home, however, she transforms into a lazy, messy, immature chibi character in her famous hamster outfit. She lays around the house playing games or watching TV amidst a pile of empty snack bags and other miscellaneous items. She refuses to do anything for herself at home, making her brother run errands for her and complaining loudly if he doesn’t.

9 Mei Hatsume Has All The Characteristics Of A Great Inventor, Including The Messiness (My Hero Academia)

Genius inventors are notoriously absent-minded, and Mei Hatsume from My Hero Academia is no exception. Mei’s energetic personality is channeled entirely into her beloved “babies,” her various inventions used to enhance U.A. High School students’ Quirks. She has any number of these projects going on all at once, and she doesn’t devote her entire attention to any one of them for very long.

Her workshop is covered with various half-built devices and in-progress experiments. Although she’s a mess with bits of dust, dirt, grime, and grease smudged all over her, she gleefully runs all over her lab tinkering with her toys.

8 Clara Valac Lives To Play And Doesn’t Care About The Mess (Welcome To Demon School! Iruma-Kun)

Dear Clara from Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun doesn’t spend any of her energy on organizing anything. Like most of the members of her wild family, she incessantly plays with everything around her, whether it’s her friends, fellow students, or intriguing objects. And if there isn’t anything around to play with, she’ll produce something from her pockets with her demon powers. As a result, her home is covered in all kinds of toys, balls, snacks, and other miscellaneous objects that get left behind when playtime is over.

7 Chika Fujiwara Likes To Ruin Plans (Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War!)

Many anime fans first met Chika Fujiwara before watching Kaguya-sama: Love is War!, as she stormed the internet with her famous ending sequence dance from an early season one episode of the series. Then, upon watching the show, viewers got a full dose of this chaotic character. She’s not messy in the literal sense, but she’s great at making a mess of a situation. Chika regularly interrupts the scheme of the day between Kaguya and Miyuki Shirogane, mindlessly walking in on them, interjecting unrelated comments, or stealing their food. Her adorable inability to read a room leaves the two lovebirds’ plans in tatters every time.

6 Vash The Stampede Leaves A Trail Of Costly Destruction In His Wake (Trigun)

Vash from Trigun has a “$60 million” bounty on his head for a reason. It’s the same reason he’s earned the title “the stampede” — he brings disaster everywhere he goes. The rumors aren’t exactly try, as he never is the actual cause of the destruction he leaves in his wake. Still, giant messes seem to follow him everywhere.

And while he himself isn’t to blame, ultimately his laid-back style and rumored past are responsible for this chaos. This has led the Bernardelli Insurance Society to send two of its employees to seek him out and attempt to mitigate the damage before it gets too extensive.

5 Mako Mankanshoku Doesn’t Have Time To Clean (Kill La Kill)

The rather rambunctious Mako Mankanshoku is one of the most recognized characters from Kill la Kill. She’s remembered for her extreme amounts of energy, her wild family, and her messiness. Her home is cluttered with kinds of junk. She has clothing hanging on the walls and laying disorganized on the floor, and books and papers are piled up in massive stacks in her room. She’s all over the place all the time, and she’s too busy with other things to bother with cleaning. She has plenty of energy to clean up these messes, with the exception of when she falls asleep in class.

4 Ed Is Too Focused On More Important Things (Cowboy Bebop)

Edward Wong Hau Pepulu Tivruski IV, better known as Ed, spends most of her time hacking computers in Cowboy Bebop. Nothing else really concerns her, especially not her hygiene or the tidiness of her space. She cannot stay focused long enough to even have a normal conversation, much less clean up after herself. She doesn’t let things like throwing out trash or washing clothes get in the way of her carefree lifestyle after joining the crew of the Bebop.

3 Taiga Aisaka Never Learned How To Clean The House (Toradora!)

Taiga from Toradora! would make a terrible roommate. Since moving out on her own, she hasn’t kept up with the housework and won’t even cook for herself. Luckily for her, Ryuuji arrives in her life and somehow ends up cleaning up her apartment and making food for her. Taiga never learned how to do these things, as she was raised in a wealthy family. At the same time, it’s not like she has any desire to start cleaning or cooking anyway. It’s a good thing Ryuuji is happy to do these things for Taiga as their friendship grows stronger.

A powerful woman who oversees operations at the NERV command center, Major Katsuragi from Neon Genesis Evangelion lets loose when she’s at home. Before Shinji and Asuka joined her in her apartment, she had lived a single life for some time and had become somewhat messy during that time. And for now, she likes it that way.

Once she returns from work, she won’t even wait to get to her bedroom before scattering articles of clothing around the room and popping open cans of beer that tend to accumulate around her kitchen and living room.

1 Kanbaru Suruga Has No Problem With The Stacks Of Books All Over Her Room (Monogatari Series)

Of the several surreal messes in the Monogatari series, Kanbaru’s piles of red books are probably the most notorious. The books are spread out all over her room, piling up above head level. During one of Araragi’s visits to Kanbaru’s home, they scatter these books everywhere, making the mess even worse. Given the surreal elements in this show, it’s debatable whether it’s in Kanbaru’s power to clean this mess up, or it just takes care of itself somehow. But if it’s the former, Kanbaru doesn’t seem to have a problem with the mess, blissfully enjoying her time with Araragi amidst the clutter.
