Only Murders in the Building Redeems One Villain and Frees Another

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Only Murders in the Building Season 1, Episode 8, “Fan Fiction,” now available on Hulu.

As Only Murders in the Building rolls on, the sleuths at the Arconia are finally making ground into Tim Kono’s death. They’ve had a series of suspects, and it’s easy to see why sandwich magnate Teddy Dimas (Nathan Lane), ends up at the top of the list at one point. His black market jewelry dealings are suspicious, and they may have pulled Tim into his crosshairs. However, as the investigation continues, while one villain’s redeemed, another one gets freed, leaving the case up in the air.

Tim was searching for a ring taken off Zoe the night she died, hoping to prove Teddy covered up for his son, Theo — the person who really pushed Zoe off the roof. The crew believes this is what motivated Teddy to blow Tim’s brains out, using his money and influence to make it seem like a suicide. They think after Tim was forced into silence, Teddy realized he got the smoking gun in the ring, or was close to attaining it, so he needed to cull evidence by getting rid of Tim.

As such, the sleuths dump their last podcast online, prompting Detective Williams and her cops to bust in. They arrest Teddy and his son, finding their secret stash of jewelry, which hints at motive to silence Tim. Mabel’s glad, as she always felt Tim was a good guy, and this proves he cut her off after Zoe died because Teddy promised to hurt her if Tim kept her close. It was Teddy’s way of ensuring none of the teen friends would snoop around his conspiracy, but now that Charles has unlocked Tim’s phone, they find Tim’s last will and testament.

There they find a video where he apologizes to the superintendent’s son, Oscar, who just got out from jail. He did time because Tim lied and framed him for pushing Zoe off the roof, but Tim confesses it’s because Teddy intimidated him into it.

Tim had to make Oscar a fall guy or Mabel would have been killed. Oscar tears up, as he lost so many years of his life, not to mention he and Zoe were dating at the time. Nonetheless, he forgives Tim, ready to move on with a relationship with Mabel.

As Charles, Mabel and Oliver celebrate the success, though, Williams gets key intel and discovers the Dimases weren’t even at the hotel the night Tim died.

Camera footage has them across the street in the Big Apple, plus the secret toxicology ran on Tim confirms he was poisoned before he was shot. Williams now believes it’s someone still in the hotel; a person close to Tim, hiding in plain sight, worrying the podcasters once more they’ve got a wolf in sheep’s clothing walking around.

To see the late Tim and Oscar mend fences, and the Dimases get exonerated, check out Episode 8 of Only Murders in the Building, available now on Hulu.
