Venom 2 Gives Eddie Brock an Unexpected Ability and a New Superpower

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, now playing in theaters.

In the comics, Eddie Brock was best known as a reporter for the Daily Bugle before bonding with the symbiote, Venom. Venom: Let There Be Carnage keeps the reporter spirit of the character alive, with him trying to maintain a job with the Daily Bugle when he isn’t arguing with Venom. In the film, Eddie (Tom Hardy) is tasked with getting information out of Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson) about a collection of bodies he hid after he murdered them. While the first meeting doesn’t yield positive results for Eddie, Venom’s newfound ability proves invaluable to his reporting.

While going over the information, Venom takes control over Eddie’s hands to recreate the drawing he saw in Cletus’ cell. At first, Eddie can’t understand what Venom is drawing because it makes as little sense as the information Cletus gave to Eddie. However, when paired with a scenic view of a cliffside in California, the drawing reveals the locations of the bodies. It quickly becomes clear that the skills Venom has learned could help Eddie to be an even better journalist.

With Venom at his side, Eddie has an ally that can remember much more than he ever could. When recording Cletus before his execution, Venom even explains that recorders aren’t necessary because he has an impeccable memory. As a result, Eddie could use his time with a person to delve into their character while Venom obtains any crucial evidence surrounding the person or what they’re saying.

Another skill in Venom 2 that could prove to be invaluable hasn’t been seen with Venom. Instead, his offspring, Carnage, showcased the ability to hack into and manipulate technology to access police records. In the comics, Carnage has been known to perform similar feats with electronics, but Venom was never able to. However, the first Venom film revealed that Venom is also unable to make weapons similar to Riot’s. That’s not to say that that Venom isn’t capable; he simply doesn’t know how to perform these feats. But if he learns how to hack as Carnage does, he could give Eddie access to sensitive case files that could help him with certain pieces.

That being said, some of these abilities that Venom has, and could still learn, raise ethical questions about his work’s integrity. As a result, there’s an inherent risk involved with using these skills because if Eddie gets found out, he could lose another reporting job. But because Venom is adept at stealth, this risk may not be as clear and present as it seems due to the nature of being a symbiote.

Eddie Brock is undoubtedly a capable reporter in the Venom movies. But it must also be said that with Venom, he becomes an even better reporter than he ever was. With the symbiote’s fantastic memory and potential ability to manipulate tech, the two could be the most skilled reporting duo in history. That being said, all they’d have to do is avoid getting caught.

See Venom be an all-star journalist in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, in theaters now.
