Fantastic Beasts: 10 Plot Threads The Secrets Of Dumbledore Needs To Resolve

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has captivated the imaginations of countless people, filling their childhoods with joy, mystical creatures, and – on more than one occasion – tears. Recent controversies have led some fans to be less enthusiastic about the series, but others are still waiting for more answers and more content from author J.K. Rowling.

Through Fantastic Beasts 3: The Secrets of Dumbledore, they may just get their wish. Due for release in April 2022, the movie will for the first time include Mads Mikkelsen as Gellert Grindelwald, after the previous actor Johnny Depp resigned due to a lost libel lawsuit. The Secrets of Dumbledore has already filled many fans with anticipation, as long-time followers of Harry Potter have hoped to unveil the mysteries hiding behind Professor Albus Dumbledore‘s grandfatherly facade for years.

10 The Movie Should Address Dumbledore’s Sexuality

Ever since J.K. Rowling stated in an interview that Dumbledore was gay, this aspect of his background has been a plot thread that desperately needed to be handled. Many fans were displeased with the author for introducing it so suddenly, having shown no sign of Dumbledore’s sexuality in the actual books. This didn’t provide real representation.

With Fantastic Beasts, the opportunity finally came to fix this oversight. The first two movies proved to be disappointing in this regard, as the point is barely addressed. Dumbledore’s connection to Gellert is hinted at when he sees his lost lover in the Mirror of Erised, but there’s no real confirmation beyond that. If Fantastic Beasts 3 intends to reveal Dumbledore’s secrets, it should start there.

9 Dumbledore’s Blood Pact With Gellert Remains A Mystery

Much like Dumbledore’s romantic connection with Gellert, the blood pact between the two remains a mystery. The detail was introduced in the Fantastic Beasts movies. Created during their teenage years, it doesn’t allow them to hurt each other. The blood pact is tied to Gellert Grindelwald pendant, which Newt Scamander’s niffler steals during the Battle in the Lestrange Family Mausoleum in Paris.

Beyond that, not much is known about the spell. By 1945, Dumbledore will break the blood pact, as that is when he and Gellert have their fateful duel. That may or may not happen in this movie, but more details on the actual spell would still be nice.

8 Fans Would Love To Know Who Really Killed Ariana Dumbledore

One of the main reasons for the fallout between Albus and Gellert is the death of Albus’s sister, Ariana. Attacked at a young age by a group of muggle boys, Ariana is left traumatized. Her father Percival seeks revenge against her attackers and is sentenced to Azkaban. No longer able to control her magic, Ariana accidentally kills her mother, Kendra, which leaves her in the care of her oldest brother, Albus.

This responsibility is a burden to Albus who shares Gellert’s ambitions of muggle domination. In the end, Albus’s brother, Abefort, confronts the two, and in the three-way duel, a stray spell hits Ariana. Dumbledore never finds out whose spell killed his sister, but in the aftermath of her death, Gellert flees England and is legally blamed for it. After all this time, fans would love to find out who really killed her.

7 Credence Barebone’s Survival Needs Some Elaboration

The Fantastic Beasts movies include characters from the original series, but new and exciting presences have been added to the cast. Credence Barebone appears in the first movie as an abused young man, living with the New Salem Philanthropic Society. The mistreatment creates a parasitical force inside him, turning him into an Obscurial.

Gellert seeks to use Credence against Albus, as the power of the Obscurus may help him bypass the blood pact. At the end of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, Credence is apparently killed by the MACUSA Aurors. He turns up alive and well in the next movie. Supposedly, his Obscurial form protected him, but that explanation is too vague and unsatisfying.

6 Credence’s Connection To The Dumbledores Should Be Explained

In the finale of The Crimes of Grindelwald, Gellert takes Credence to his fortress in Nurmengard. There, he reveals that Credence has a bond with a phoenix and his true name is supposedly Aurelius Dumbledore.

It’s unclear how this is possible, as canon has mentioned only three Dumbledore siblings until the Fantastic Beasts movies. There has been some speculation that Kendra could have had another child after Percival’s arrest or that Credence is actually Aberforth’s son. Considering the timeline and Credence’s age, that doesn’t quite fit. Either way, this is definitely something that should be explained, particularly after the explosive way it was revealed.

5 Nagini’s Journey To Becoming Voldemort’s Familiar Would Be Worth Exploring

Human Nagini

Gellert Grindelwald isn’t the first connection Credence makes, as he first bonds with the mysterious Nagini. Nagini is a Maledictus, a woman carrying a blood curse that will eventually turn her into a particular type of animal. In Nagini’s case, that animal is a snake. She first meets Credence at the Circus Arcanus, where she is used as a freak attraction and he is a worker. They flee the circus and embark on a journey to uncover Credence’s true identity. Nagini is left behind after Credence joins Grindelwald and she becomes one of Grindelwald’s opponents.

It would be interesting to know how she went from fighting for good to becoming Voldemort’s familiar. Some speculations can be made, of course. By the time Voldemort finds her, Nagini is completely lost to her curse. Still, her journey would be worth exploring in more detail.

4 The Movie Should Finally Take Viewers To Ilvermorny

Considering the importance of Hogwarts in the main series, it seems strange that the American school of wizardry, Ilvermorny, has yet to make an appearance in Fantastic Beasts. The movies have made references to it, as Newt Scamander’s girlfriend, Tina, and her sister Queenie are both graduates of the school. With Fantastic Beasts 3, viewers may finally travel to Ilvermorny, as it appears that the Ilvermorny Charms professor, Eulalie Hicks, will play a bigger role.

3 Queenie’s Switch In Allegiances Desperately Needs To Be Addressed

One of the most likable characters in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Queenie changes a lot in the second movie. Her romance with the No-Maj baker Jacob Kowalski takes a turn for the worse. Following Rappaport’s Law, the American Ministry of Magic demands a total separation between the No-Maj community and wizards, banning marriages and even friendships. Queenie wishes for her and Jacob to get married, but Jacob is against it as he doesn’t want to get her in trouble. Angry at his refusal, Queenie places him under a love spell.

Newt Scamander breaks the spell, and in her anger, Queenie leaves her friends and family behind. Gellert takes advantage of her emotional distress and persuades her to join his cause. Even in light of Gellert’s manipulations, Queenie’s decision seems utterly outlandish. It’s a waste of the character’s potential and desperately needs to be addressed.

2 Newt’s Relationship With Leta And His School Years Deserve Some Extra Attention

Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander is ostensibly the main character in the Fantastic Beasts movies. Despite that, there’s still a lot viewers don’t know about him – beyond his love for fantastic beasts, at least. He was presumably expelled for an incident related to Leta Lestrange, despite the fact that Albus Dumbledore protested the punishment. It’s unclear why he was allowed to keep his wand when Hagrid’s was snapped after his expulsion.

Many details about his relationships with Leta have also remained unresolved, and her death hasn’t helped things one bit. Considering her importance for Newt’s background and his relevance for the series in general, these details would deserve some extra attention.

1 Tom Riddle’s School Years Are A Tempting Plot Thread To Deal With

The Fantastic Beasts series starts in 1926, but the third movie is said to take place at some point before 1939. If that is the case, a young Tom Riddle could become a factor, as he starts his Hogwarts years in 1938. Riddle’s obsession with evading death is clearly related to his experiences in World War II, but the war with Grindelwald could have still influenced him in some way.

The Lestranges have always been involved with Voldemort’s Death Eaters, which is another plot thread the movie could handle. Eddie Redmayne has also shown interest in seeing Hagrid in the movies, so fans of the likable giant may get lucky in that regard.
