The director of Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Star Wars star Andy Serkis revealed he was gutted by the abrupt death of his character Supreme Leader Snoke, and hopes he might one day revisit the role.
Speaking to CBR, Serkis reflected on how the Marvel Cinematic Universe plays around with its open possibilities, and then pondered on some standout roles in his career that he would like to reprise given the opportunity. He said, “I’d quite like to revisit Snoke, in a way, because I feel like he was kind of cut off in his prime, quite frankly.”
Serkis explained that his initial excitement to continue the role of Snoke ultimately led to disappointment upon reading the script for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. He said, “When I first read Rian [Johnson]’s scripts, I was like excited! [laughs] I finished page 25, 26, it’s all going well; it’s just like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is gonna be a fantastic, fantastic character,’ and then, page 45, it’s just like, ‘And then Rey comes into the room, and — oh! You get cut in half!’ I’m like, ‘What?!’ I was devastated! I mean, obviously, it worked dramatically well in the movie, but I think there’s a lot to unpack with Snoke.”
Snoke was first introduced during Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He was entirely rendered in CGI, but Serkis provided both his voice and the motion capture for the character. The mysterious Sith lord was given very little screen time following his debut before being abruptly killed off in the following film.
Snoke was not the only one of Serkis’ characters to meet their end during that particular time in his career. He remarked, “Caesar, Klaue and Snoke all died in one year. It was not a good year!” Serkis had played the live-action character of Ulysses Klaue, a black-market arms dealer in the MCU, for both Avengers: Age of Ultron and as an antagonist in Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther. Serkis recently reprised the role during an episode of What If…? His motion capture performance as Caesar in War for the Planet of the Apes saw the conclusion of the character’s story following the previous two movies in the franchise.
While Snoke’s death came abruptly during the most recent Star Wars trilogy, similar clones of the character were present in Palpatine’s lair in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The character also received some focus in a one-shot comic book Age of Resistance: Villains – Supreme Leader Snoke.
