Titans’ Jay Lycurgo Taped His Tim Drake Audition While Sick With COVID

Titans actor Jay Lycurgo says he recorded his audition for the role of Tim Drake in HBO Max’s DC series while he was battling coronavirus (COVID-19).

“At the time, it was a character called Danny, or Daniel. It was so long ago. It was just another tape,” Lycurgo said in an exclusive interview with CBR. “I watched a few of the episodes. To be honest, I had COVID at the time. I was so ill. I was thinking, ‘Okay, we just have to get it done.'”

Lycurgo eventually heard that his name was on the shortlist and then found out from his manager that he got the part. “He was like, ‘By the way, you are playing Tim Drake, who is Robin,'” the actor recalled. “I was like, ‘Nah. You are joking.'” He continued, “My Dad loves Batman and Robin. He bought Batman and Robin and the car that they are driving. You see these little action figures. It was a really weird moment, but I was so excited for what was to come.”

Lycurgo made his debut as Tim Drake in Season 3 of Titans, which is streaming now on HBO Max. The character is described as “a streetwise genius with a natural detective instinct.” In the world of DC’s comics, Tim is known as the third person to assume the mantle of Robin, following Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. While he has yet to don the suit, Lycurgo confirmed that his Tim Drake becoming Robin is absolutely part of the plan.

“I can’t really get into it. The excitement for fans to see, or not see, or when it happens, it will be such a surprise and an exciting moment,” the actor conceded. “I won’t get into it too much except Tim Drake is a Robin. It’s only a matter of time before it happens. It’s just a matter of when.”

Lycurgo also previously expressed interest in exploring Drake’s bisexuality on Titans, explaining, “I’m all for it, and it’s just nice that apart from having a biracial Robin, he’s also someone that is comfortable with his sexuality… From the bottom of my heart, it is incredible to see someone as iconic as Robin to be bisexual. It’s not done a lot, but it just shows that things are changing.”

Episodes 1-10 of Titans Season 3 are available to stream now, exclusively on HBO Max.
