WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 11, Episode 6, “On the Inside,” which aired Sunday on AMC.
The first third of The Walking Dead Season 11 has pit the Reapers as the primary antagonists to the Alexandrian community. While Maggie and some of the others were out looking for food and supplies, they were ambushed by the former military group. As they fled, many were injured, some were killed and Daryl was captured. After some waterboarding, a trial by fire and meeting up with an old love interest, the Reapers’ leader, Pope, was convinced that Daryl wasn’t really part of Maggie’s group. So, he let Daryl join his religiously fanatical crew.
While he was being held, Daryl saw that Frost – another member of Maggie’s Wardens – had also been captured. In order to keep up the façade that he was building at the time, Daryl acted like he didn’t know Frost, telling his old ally not to talk to him and get him in trouble. Luckily Frost understood what Daryl was doing and played along at the time. In this week’s episode, however, Frost being held captive made things difficult for Daryl.
Pope already demonstrated that he doesn’t mess around when he shoved Bossie into the fire, so it wasn’t a surprise when the Reaper leader decided to forcefully extract information about Maggie out of Frost. A Reaper named Carver was torturing Frost when Pope told Daryl to take a turn and speed up the process. He cannot blow his cover, so he was forced to make Frost talk by any means necessary.
Daryl started simple and choked Frost to help cloud his judgement, but he is determined to remain strong and not give up the location of Maggie’s hiding spot. Next, Daryl hit him, but Frost again refused. Forced to up the ante, Daryl took a knife, at Carver’s suggestion, and prepared to start “removing pieces.”
After a last chance to come clean, Frost tried refusing to talk with some colorful language, but before he could finish his insult, Daryl had cut off one of his fingers. At that point, Frost couldn’t resist any longer and gave up the information, but in a way that allowed Daryl to warn Maggie and the others of their approach.
While Daryl and the Reapers were out looking where Frost sent them, Carver made it very clear that he didn’t trust Daryl. The thinking is, if Carver didn’t trust him, it’s likely that many of the other Reapers don’t trust him either. So, as he continues working to bring the Reapers down from the inside, he has to be careful and keep a low profile until he is ready to strike.
To see Daryl working undercover as a Reaper, tune into Season 11 of The Walking Dead. The series airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on AMC and is available to stream early on AMC+.
