Paramount+’s Grease Prequel Posts Open Casting Call for Lead Roles

Paramount+ has put out an opening casting call for its planned Grease prequel series, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.

Rise of the Pink Ladies is looking for actors to bring its Pink Ladies to life. In the original Grease, the Pink Ladies were Rizzo (Stockard Channing), Frenchie (Didi Conn), Marty (Dinah Manoff), Jan (Jamie Donnelly) and, eventually, Sandy (Olivia Newton-John). While Sandy and Danny (John Travolta) were the focus of the first movie, the Paramount+ prequel will focus on the Pink Ladies and their rise to popularity.

Per Collider, the official casting call says the series is looking for “true triple threats who are 18 years or older” to play high school juniors. Actors of all gender expressions are welcome, as are those of any sexual orientation. The casting call also says “all body types, all ethnicities, all races, all nationalities, all religions and performers with disabilities are encouraged to submit.”

Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies is set four years before the events of Grease, long before rock and roll and the T-Birds ruled the halls. The original Pink Ladies are described as “four fed-up, outcast girls” who simply want to have fun on their own terms. This, naturally, sparks a moral outcry at Rydell High School that’ll change the school forever.

The Paramount+ series was initially in development at HBO Max before moving streaming services. Annabel Oakes will serve as the showrunner and writer on the show’s 10 episodes. Marty Bowen (The Maze Runner) and Adam Fishbach (Narcos: Mexico) will executive produce for Temple Hill and Erik Feig will executive produce for PICTURESTART.

Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies is based on the 1971 musical Grease. The beloved classic has been adapted for a television musical by Fox, as well as a Broadway musical. Prior to the Paramount+ series, a prequel titled Summer Loving was in development although the status of that remains unknown. HBO Max was also looking to release a television adaptation titled Grease: Rydell High. Rise of the Pink Ladies is the latest to receive a series order but the first to seemingly enter the casting process.
