Titans’ Tim Drake Actor Kept His Batman Role a Secret From His Co-Stars

Actor Jay Lycurgo recently admitted that he kept his upcoming role in Matt Reeves’ The Batman secret from his Titans co-stars.

“No, nobody knew. It was like an unspoken thing,” Lycurgo, who portrays Tim Drake on the HBO Max series, told DC Comics.com. “I did The Batman a year before I even got a tape for Titans.” The actor added that, when the trailer came out for The Batman, he started getting “a little buzz on social media.”

“And then Titans came and for awhile it was like, ‘Do they know?'” Lycurgo continued. “I don’t even know if I actually ever said anything to our producer Greg Walker. I still don’t even know if he knows. Greg, if you don’t know already, I’m in Batman.”

Lycurgo made his debut as Tim Drake in Season 3 of Titans, which is streaming now. When his casting was first announced, Walker described the character as “a streetwise genius with a natural detective instinct.” He added, “Upon the Titans’ arrival in Gotham, an obsessive young man — Tim Drake — suspects he’s cracked the identities of both Batman and Robin, and in doing so, gets pulled into Gotham’s dark mysteries.”

While Drake appeared as a recurring character throughout the new season, one scene, in particular, involving the character appeared to mimic a scene between Drake and Robin from the Batman #441 (1989) comic book. The scene specifically showed Drake confronting Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) about his superhero alter ego.

The extent of Lycurgo’s role in The Batman is unknown, but the character is listed as “Thug” on the actor’s IMDB profile. In related news, Reeves recently shared new footage of Robert Pattinson’s version of The Dark Knight while commemorating Batman Day 2021 on Sept. 18. “I have been away so long…! Just popping my head out of the editing room for a moment to say [Happy Batman Day]!” the director wrote on social media, alongside a shot that showed him working on post-production for The Batman, with a screen depicting Pattinson’s Dark Knight visible in the background. “Can’t wait to share a lot more with you all four weeks from today at [DC FanDome].”

HBO Max is also reportedly in the early stages of developing a spinoff series centered on Colin Farrell’s version of The Penguin, who will be introduced in The Batman. It’s believed that The Batman director Reeves and producer Dylan Clarke will serve as executive producers on the spinoff series, with Lauren LeFranc penning the script.

Titans’ Season 3 finale premieres on HBO Max on Sept. 30. Meanwhile, The Batman arrives in theaters on March 4, 2022.
