In most anime, the characters’ appearance does just as much in piquing the viewers’ interest as the plot and setting do. Particularly when it comes to shonen, outlandish outfits and accessories are not only meant to pull in an audience but help set each character apart from the rest. These personal styles can also reflect a character’s fighting style, backstory, and personality. This aids the story-telling aspect of the show as well as making it visually appealing to the viewers.
Naruto: Shippuden has some of the most iconic outfits in anime, but that doesn’t mean that a few outfits don’t stand above the others. Some outfits are so unique to the show that they leave a lasting impression on the viewers, which is exactly the intention of both fashion and character stylization.
10 Orochimaru’s Look Is Timeless
In Shippuden, most of the characters get outfit upgrades to reflect their growth as ninja. By keeping his same look throughout the entire series, Orochimaru demonstrates that he doesn’t need to change—physically or otherwise—to prove his strength.
Orochimaru has always been a villain who calls the shots and works only for himself. It makes sense that he wouldn’t don the Akatsuki garb for long. Instead, Orochimaru has a simple outfit, demonstrating that he doesn’t need to rely on a flashy outer appearance in order to strike fear into the heroes’ hearts. Considering that his style is recycled from Part One and many of his minions have worn similar styles, it goes to show how sometimes the simplest outfits are the most memorable.
9 Tsunade Changes The Typical Hokage Look
It’s clear that Tsunade has changed the way the Hokage interacts with the village, but she has also changed the way the Hokage presents in an aesthetic sense. Her clothes are practical for both fighting and practicing medical ninjutsu, but she doesn’t dress as combat-ready as other characters who may be taking on missions more frequently.
As a character who places a lot of emphasis on appearance, it also makes sense that Tsunade’s outfit is sleek and coordinated in shades of green. Even though Tsunade uses part of her chakra to consistently look young for her age, a large factor in her vibrant appearance is her choice of clothing.
8 Gaara Recreates His Part One Look
While the overall color scheme and look of Gaara’s outfit haven’t changed much from Part One, as the now Fifth Kazekage, Gaara appears far more mature. The protective vest and thick fabric make sense considering how violent his fighting style can get. He still carries his gourd which, on top of being a unique weapon, makes his character easy to identify.
His crimson coat is great for standing dramatically, and it seems like Gaara has planned for this as it always billows when he stands in the wind or makes an entrance.
7 Temari Looks Sleek & Ready To Fight
Temari’s outfit contains components that many outfits in Shippuden have: fishnets, sandals, and the common forehead protector. However, Temari has definitely strayed from the typical ninja uniform and gone for a more personalized aesthetic.
Her dress is long and simple, but the slit allows her to move freely during her fights while still remaining modest. Because her dress is rather plain, Temari is able to move quickly and under the radar during battle. Despite the look’s subtleness, the red accents complement her personality perfectly, and, of course, no outfit is complete without a giant fan.
6 Rock Lee’s Jumpsuit Makes An Impact
Not only does Lee have one of the most unique personalities and fighting styles in the franchise, but he has one of the most unique looks as well. Having been given his patented green jumpsuit from his beloved Guy Sensei, it makes sense that Lee has kept his outfit nearly the same over the years.
In Shippuden, after passing the Chunin Exams, he adds the classic Leaf Village vest to his uniform. He still uses bandage wrappings and bright orange leg warmers, both of which help him with his training. However, this look he originally acquired to help grow stronger has since created one of the most memorable anime outfits of all time.
5 Ino’s Outfit Could Be Worn In Real Life
To say Ino’s style in Shippuden is practical wouldn’t be a fair statement. In fact, Ino likely has the least practical outfit out of the Konoha 11. That being said, it is one of the few looks that are timeless not only in-universe but in real life as well.
By only using a simple purple and black color pattern, the outfit doesn’t become outdated. It also incorporates the perfect amount of the classic Naruto fishnet. With a midriff halter top and loose skirt, Ino’s outfit could be worn both in a ninja war and at the mall.
4 Sasuke Pulls Off The Deep V
As one of the most crucial characters in the show, it makes sense that Sasuke’s outfit would be well-thought-out. While many characters kept most aspects of their Part One looks, Sasuke has completely reinvented himself. Sasuke wears rope around his pants, demonstrating his affiliation with Orochimaru, a huge aspect of his character arc.
In addition to this, Sasuke’s previously high collar is replaced by a deep V blouse. This not only shows how Sasuke has matured as a character but that he is less afraid and no longer shields himself from his enemies.
3 The Akatsuki’s Uniform Is On Most Merchandise
In terms of influence on the anime community, the Akatsuki cloak, comprised of black fabric with red clouds, is by far one of the most popular merchandise designs. This being said, the pattern wouldn’t be everywhere it is today if the organization hadn’t worn it while wreaking havoc.
While each member’s personal style is different, when the Akatsuki don their cloaks and raise their collars, everyone in the show knows exactly who they are. The simple red and black color combination and basic design have made this outfit both unique and timeless.
2 Sai Nails A Crop Top
Being a character who is only introduced in Shippuden, Sai dresses well to set himself apart from the other ninja. Sai’s clothes are very similar to the Anbu uniform, however, his outfit is more detailed. With different length sleeves and a midriff top, Sai’s unique look demonstrates that he doesn’t approach battle the same way his now-teammates do.
Being the strongest Root member of his generation, in addition to his long-distance fighting style, it makes sense that Sai wouldn’t be afraid to bare some skin. This is also an interesting stylistic choice as his notably pale skin pops against the black of his sleeves and pants.
1 Naruto’s Sage Mode Looks Amazing
While Naruto’s use of bright orange as a ninja may seem nonsensical, it fits perfectly with his loud, forward approach to life. Naruto doesn’t hide and wait to strike; he runs headfirst into battle and that’s what sets him apart as the protagonist.
When Naruto goes into Sage Mode, his outfit is just as vibrant as always, but he pulls it off in such a mature way compared to his appearance in Part One. His red jacket and the orange around his eyes alone make him look way cooler than before. Maybe it’s the way he resembles his father most while in Sage Mode, but it’s absolutely the best outfit in Shippuden.
