Every Version of James Bond’s Most Dangerous Villain | CBR

Over the course of the James Bond film series, six actors have portrayed the iconic super-spy. Each incarnation of the character has faced off against some dastardly foes, although some of these villains made a bigger impression than others. Whether it be through amassed power, personal vendettas or simply the sheer scale of their plans, each version of 007 has a villain that stands out as their worst foe. Let’s break down each James Bond’s most dangerous foe and analyze just what makes them such a threat to MI6’s premiere spy.

Auric Goldfinger – Sean Connery’s Bond

Auric Goldfinger is the main antagonist of 1964’s Goldfinger, which stars Sean Connery in his third outing as 007. The character is a businessman and gold smuggler who plans to destroy Fort Knox and irradiate all the gold within, rendering it useless while simultaneously increasing the value of his personal gold collection. James Bond ends up foiling his plans by convincing his pilot, Pussy Galore, to betray him, and Goldfinger is eventually killed when he is sucked out of a plane.

While Connery’s Bond faced off against several iconic foes including Blofeld and Red Grant, Goldfinger is ultimately his biggest threat. The scene where he attempts to kill the spy using his laser has since become a legendary moment that has been parodied countless times, as has his painting of Jill Masterson’s body. In addition, Goldfinger has Bond completely fooled when it came to the true purpose of his plan, with 007 only figuring it out after Blofeld explains the plan to him. When it comes to villains, Auric Goldfinger is as good as gold.

Ernst Stavro Blofeld – George Lazenby’s Bond

Blofeld Telly Savalas James Bond

There have been several actors to portray Ernst Stavro Blofeld throughout the Bond series, but none has hurt 007 more than the version played by Telly Savalas in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The film sees George Lazenby’s Bond traveling to the Swiss Alps to capture the SPECTRE leader, meeting and falling in love with Contessa Teresa “Tracy” de Vicenzo along the way. Bond and Tracy defeat Blofeld and are married, only for Tracy to be gunned down under Blofeld’s orders in the film’s final moments.

The murder of Tracy by Blofeld and his right-hand woman Irma Bunt may be the most devastating blow ever dealt to the character of James Bond. For the first time in his life, 007 had found true love, only for Blofeld to cruelly pry it away from him. Tracy’s death is one of the few plot points that continued to be referenced even after Lazenby vacated the role, proving its importance and impact on the character.

Francisco Scaramanga – Roger Moore’s Bond

Francisco Scaramanga James Bond

The titular character in The Man With The Golden Gun is Francisco Scaramanga, an incredibly skilled assassin who decides to test his abilities against Roger Moore’s Bond. He steals a powerful weapon to lure the spy to his private island, where they engage in a cat-and-mouse duel. Unfortunately for Scaramanga, Bond is just a bit quicker on the trigger than him, and the assassin is shot dead.

Unlike most of the series’ other villains, Scaramanga is not a madman with a diabolical plot to take over the world. Instead, he is simply a man at the top of his game who is out to prove himself by eliminating the only person who equals him in skill – James Bond. This makes their rivalry much more personal, and it also doesn’t hurt that Scaramanga is portrayed with menacing gravitas by the inimitable Christopher Lee.

Franz Sanchez – Timothy Dalton’s Bond

Franz Sanchez James Bond

In Licence to Kill, drug kingpin Franz Sanchez has CIA agent Felix Leiter’s wife Della killed, and orders for Felix himself to be brutally maimed by sharks. This causes Timothy Dalton’s 007, a friend of Felix’s, to begin a campaign of vengeance against Sanchez that involves destroying his operation from the inside. At the film’s end, Sanchez is karmically burned to death by Bond, using a lighter that Felix had previously given him.

Similar to Scaramanga, Sanchez is not a cackling madman but is instead an incredibly savvy criminal. His murder of Della and maiming of Felix show that he will do anything to keep his operation alive and prospering, including the killing of innocents. Despite his lack of an over-the-top plan or a gaudy disfigurement, Sanchez is one of the most monstrous foes James Bond has ever faced.

Elektra King – Pierce Brosnan’s Bond

While the terrorist Renard seems to be the primary threat for much of The World Is Not Enough, it is revealed towards the film’s climax that Elektra has actually been pulling the strings for his plan. She was kidnapped by Renard years ago but eventually became his lover, developing a plan to destroy Istanbul in a nuclear attack.

What makes her so dangerous is her personal connection to Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond, which she doesn’t hesitate to take advantage of to further her plan. Because of her and Bond’s prior relationship, Elektra is able to fly under the radar until it’s almost too late to stop her. Elektra also holds the distinction of being the first female main villain of the James Bond series.

Raoul Silva – Daniel Craig’s Bond

Raoul Silva James Bond

While he may not have hurt Daniel Craig‘s Bond on a personal level as much as someone like Le Chiffre or Blofeld did, there’s no doubt that nobody has dealt a harsher blow to MI6 as a whole than Raoul Silva. In Skyfall, Silva is a former agent of the organization who revamped himself as a terrorist hacker, developing and executing an incredibly complicated plan to blow up MI6’s headquarters and get to M.

Silva’s greatest strengths are his planning and his sheer tenacity. Despite the complexity of his plan, it goes off nearly without a hitch, and he delivers one crippling blow after another to MI6 throughout the film. Even though he is killed by Bond, M succumbs to her injuries shortly afterward, making Silva one of the only Bond villains to have his plan completely succeed.
